Two Way concrete floor system

(All dimension are in "mm")

INPUT :

C/C distance in long direction = 3275 mm = 129 in

C/C distance in short direction = 3275 mm = 129 in

Length of clear span in long direction, ln = 2825 mm = 111 in

Column size = 450 x 450 mm = 450 mm = 18 in

Characteristics strength of concrete= fc = 25 N/mm2 = 3626 psi

Yield strength of R/F = fy = 415 N/mm2 = 60191 psi

Unit weight of concrete = 2.5 T/m3 =

Slab Thickness = 150 mm = 5.9 in

Dead load of slab = 0.375 T/m2 = 76.8 psf

Floor finish weight = 0.15 T/m2 = 30.7 psf

Live load on slab = 0.5 T/m2 = 102.41 psf

Length of clear span in long diretion=ln= 2.825 m= 111 in.

Factored dead load = qdu = 1.2 *DL = 129.0 psf

Factored Live load =qdl = 1.6 *LL= 163.9 psf

Total factored load = 293 psf

Slab Minimum Thickness- Deflection :

Using ACI 318-14 minimum slab thickness for two-way construction without interior beams in Table 8.3.1.1

Exterior panel =h = ln/30 = 3.7 in

Table 8.3.1.1-ACI-318-14
Interior panel=h=ln/36= 3.1 in

Using ACI 318-14 minimum slab thickness for two-way construction with interior beams in Table 8.3.1.2

αf = Ecb x Ib /(Ecs x Is)

Beam Size
Width = 300 mm = 11.8 in
Depth = 500 mm= 19.7 in

Slab Size
Width = 3275 mm= 128.9 in
Thickness= 150 mm= 5.9 in

As Ecb = Ecs, αf =Ib/Is

αf = 3.4
β= 1.0

h slab reqd1 = 2.7 in

h slab reqd2 = 3.5 in

So, hslab reqd = 3.5 in

Slab thickness provided = tslab = 150 mm = 5.9 in

Slab shear strength-one way shear :

Cclear = 0.75 in Table:-20.6.1.3.1 -ACI-318-14

db = #4 bar = 12.7 mm = 0.5 in

dl = t slab -Cclear- db -db/2 = 4.41 in

dt = tslab-Cclear -db/2= 4.91 in
davg= (dl+dt )/2 = 4.66 in

Consider a 12-in. wide strip. The critical section for one-way shear is located at a distance d, from the face
of support

Tributory area for one way shear =At = 4.2 ft2

Vu=qu * At = 1.24 kips

Vc = 2λ√fc*bw*d = 6.73 kips ACI 318-14 (Eq. 22.5.5.1)

λ for normal weight of concrete = 1

ØVc = 5.0 kips > Vu, Hence Ok

Slab thickness of 5.9" or 150 mm is adequate for one way shear.

Slab shear Strength-Two way Shear :

Tributary area for two way shear = At = 112.0 ft2

Vu= qu*At = 32.8 kips

Vc = 4λ√fc x b0 x d = 100 kips

Vc= (2+4/β)λ√fc xbxd= 151 kips Table:22.6.5.2 (a),(b),(c)-ACI-318-14
Vc= (2+αsxd/b)λ√fc xbxd= 52 kips
Least of above three,
Vc= 52 kips
ØVc = 39 kips > Vu, Hence Ok

Slab thickness of 5.9" or 150 mm is adequate for two way shear.

Two way slab design:

Design Moments :

The total factored static moment = M0 = qu x l2 x ln2 /8

M0 = 33.79 kip.ft

For interior span,

Negative Moment = 0.65M0 = 21.96 kip.ft
Positive moment = 0.35M0 = 11.83 kip.ft

Design moment = MDS = 21.96 kip.ft

MDS = φMn = φbd2fcω(1-0.59ω)

where,
φ= 0.9
b= 5.37 ft
d= 0.388 ft
fc = 522 kip/ft2

So,
379.9842 ω - 224.1907 ω2 = 21.96
or, 224.1907 ω2 - 379.9842 ω + 21.96 = 0
or, 1 ω2 - 1.69 ω + 0.10 = 0

a= 1 b= -1.69 c= 0.10

ω = 1.63
ω = 0.06

As = ωbdfc / fy = 1.08 in2

= 698.98 mm2

Asmin. = 0.0018 x 60000 x Ag / fy = 0.54 in2

= 347.4 mm2
