GAWAIN 3
SANAYSAY

TASK 1
SUMMARY The article depicts the personal experience of a students who loves to go
through a joyful escapade with his classmates during free time to take a
delicious munch of Marang fruit which is abundant in the nearby community.
Based on her scientific study, she discovered the numerous health benefits
of the fruit to human’s body.
MAIN BODY The writer has successfully supported her claims on the health contents and
(ANALYSIS) benefits that humans can get from the Marang fruit, but she has a weak
argument to prove its therapeutic efficacy and value. Reader’s attention may
not be easily hooked because she failed to mention some local health
experts that could vouch her claim of value.
CONCLUSION Though the writer intends to influence the readers to become passionate in
getting a healthy lifestyle while enjoying the nature’s scenery during lunch
break, they might have some negative interpretation. They may be enticed
to do the same unmindful of getting late from their classes and may put their
safety to risk while getting the fruit.

TASK 2
CONTEXT/INTRODUCTION Federigo, an exceptionally rich, falls in love with Monna Giovanna, a
woman of nobility and beauty. Federigo buys Monna a lot of gifts and
holds sumptuous banquets. His love for Monna Giovanna goes to the
ends of the world that he is willing to offer her everything just to win her
heart.
AUTHOR’S INTENTION The purpose is they want us to know that a person who is inlove will do
and sacrifice anything for your love even if it can be the reason to your
difficulty.
YOUR REACTION Don’t waste your time for the person who doesn’t care for you. I feel
sad for the falcon but also happy because at the same time, the money
he waste for her was finally got that person he will married to, the
woman he wanted.
THEME (CENTRAL IDEA) Theme of Federigo's Falcon by Giovanni Bocaccio are love, the nature
of giving and sacrifice. At the beginning the main character has a
strong desire that seems to be impossible to realize.
LITERARY TECHNIQUES Giovanni Boccaccio wonderfully wrote “Federigo's Falcon” as he
portrayed a tragic, romantic, and ironic story of sacrifice and love
through the sophisticated use of literary devices such as irony and
symbolism.
ENDING OF THE STORY Monna eats the bird unaware that it is the animal she has come to
request for her son. After dining, she asks Federigo for his falcon. He
then reveals that he sacrificed the creature to provide a meal worthy of
Monna. A few days later, her son dies.

TASK 1
The book’s opening poem makes the political message too clear to avoid. The title — “We Lived
Happily During The War” — is also its first line, and so the poem begins: “And when they bombed
other people’s houses, we // protested / but not enough…” This poem precedes “Deaf Republic” —
the long, sectioned, narrative poem that occupies all but a few pages of the book — and functions,
too, as a lyrical prelude. But “We Lived Happily During The War” is more than an introductory lyric —
it is also a warning of the contemporary relevance of the “parable” that will follow. “I was / in my bed,
around my bed America // was falling,” the speaker tells us. Because these lines occur before “Deaf
Republic” — before we are introduced to Vasenka or any of the “Dramatis Personae” who will
populate its occupied city square — it serves as a kind of skeleton key, providing us with a way of
reading the rest of the book. Though fictional Vasenka may exist in an unknown, Soviet-esque
country, we would be wise to map our own “falling” America onto the story. In the same way, we must
map ourselves onto the story. Kaminsky ends the poem: In the sixth month of a disastrous reign in
the house of money in the street of money in the city of money in the country of money, our great
country of money, we (forgive us) lived happily during the war. As the scope widens from “house” to
“street” and all the way out to “our great country,” the net of complicity widens, too, to include every
reader and — importantly — the speaker himself. It’s a chilling admission, but one that earns our
trust. From the beginning, Kaminsky makes his intent clear: he will hold up a mirror to himself, and, if
we happen to catch our own reflection, we would be wise to join him in owning our failures — political,
personal, or otherwise.
TASK 2
Fables often include animals as characters. The characters in ''The Boy Who Cried Wolf'' include
the eponymous boy, his flock, the townspeople, and the wolf. The whole point of the boy's job is to
keep the flock together and protect the sheep from predators. Today, sheep's main predator is the
coyote, followed by dogs, mountain lions, bears, eagles, and foxes. Wolves are actually quite low on
the list. In Aesop's time and later, wolves were feared in everyday life and played a common motif in
literature, such as werewolves and the Big Bad Wolf, who was Little Red Riding Hood's murderer.
This is where we get the phrase, ''a wolf in sheep's clothing.'' Wolves are also sometimes cast as
messengers, as symbols of harmony, or as harbingers of war. The tale concerns a
shepherd boy who repeatedly tricks nearby villagers into thinking a wolf is attacking his town's flock.
When a wolf actually does appear and the boy again calls for help, the villagers believe that it is
another false alarm and the sheep are eaten by the wolf. The moral of the story is that liars will not be
rewarded; even if they tell the truth, no one believes them.

ACTIVITY 1
A. 3- Ovulation
B. 1- Menstruation
C. 2- Follicular Phase
D. 4- Luteal Phase

Guide Question: The lining of the uterus gets thicker monthly. This is to prepare for a fertilized egg if
the woman becomes pregnant. If the egg does not get fertilized, the lining is released via the vagina
from the body as blood. This is a monthly biological process called menstruation.

ACTIVITY 2A
1. Positive Feedback
2. Negative Feedback
3. FSH
4. Estrogen
5. Progesterone

Guide Question: During menstrual cycle, positive feedback causes an increase of FSH, LH, and
estrogen. During the second half of cycle, progesterone increases as the corpus luteum in the ovary
matures and produces this hormone. Negative feedback helps to keep levels of the other three
hormones equally constant during the entire process.

Guide Question: This gives a signal that the female reproductive organs are now matured to bear a
child. This also enables to stop the production of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone.
If this does not happen, then there will be more egg cells produced and matured and may lead to
abnormalities and complications to a woman.

ACTIVITY 3 (WAS PUT ON THE OTHER BONDPAPER)

REFLECTION
Menstruation is one of a woman’s body’s vital processes that requires the utmost atter and self-
care. The trick to relieving the pain you go through is practicing good hygiene due to menstruation
and eating well. Menstrual blood attracts diverse species from our bodies released from the
bloodstream, which multiply in the warmth of the blood, causing pain, rashed infections of the urinary
tract. Changing your sanitary napkin or tampon periodically curbs avoids infections from the growth of
these species. Own well-being benefits from personal hygiene and also affects the lives of those
around you.
MARK ANTHONY LEGASPO SCIENCE Week 3

ACTIVITY 1
4 The brain decodes the signal as sight, sound, smell, taste, touch or other sensation.
2 The message travels along the axon as an electrical impulse.
5 Messages from the brain through the nerves and out to the body.
1 A message enters the neuron through the dendrites and goes directly to the cell body.
3 The message continues as an electrical impulse form one neuron to the next carrying
the information to the brain.
6 You feel in your toe.

1. The nervous system and endocrine system work together to decrease the temperature by
producing sweat to cool the body down.
2. The brain commands the mother’s body to nurture the baby. Prolactin and oxytocin are needed in
order to produce milk. The section is stimulated by the sucking of the infant at the breast of the
mother.

ACTIVITY 2
NERVOUS SYSTEM
1. Brain- it functions as organizer and distributor of knowledge.
2. Brain Stem- connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls automatic functions like breathing,
digestion, pulse and vital sign.
3. Spinal Cord- controls simple musculoskeletal reflexes without input of the brain.
4. Nerves- carry messages in the form of electric signals known as impulses.
5. Nerve cell (neuron)- made up of axon, cell body and dendrites which carries signals or impulses.

Guide Question:
1. The CNS is the main processing center for the entire NS while the PNS relays information through
the nerves which connects the central nervous system to the organs and limbs.
2. All the other parts of the nervous system will not be able to carry out their corresponding functions
and other body systems will be affected as well.

ACTIVITY 3
Homeostasis

My flesh crawls, and my blood flows As I attempt to turn to marble True stasis Homeostasis Oh to
maintain beauty to be gawked by muses And to never have been alive, merely beings of retired
faith But unsurprisingly, just as pointless I sigh… I may parish in mind and finally body But marble
will diminish slowly All while watched and attemptedly preserved I breathe. Homeostasis

REFLECTION
Of all the body systems, the nervous system is the major control system of homeostasis. It
provides monitoring, response, and regulation of all systems in the human body and other organisms.
This ability to perceive the environment and reacting to it is critical to maintaining homeostasis in the
body.

BASIS OF COMPARISON DNA RNA
1. Number of strands 2 1
2. Location in the cell Nucleus Cytoplasm
3. Type of sugar Deoxyribose Ribose
4. Nitrogen A, T, C, G A, U, C, G
Guide Question
1. The reason why uracil is only found in RNA because it is less expensive to produce than thymine.
However, in DNA is readily produce by a chemical degradation of cytosine, having thymine as the
normal base makes detection and repair of such incipient mutation more efficient.

ACTIVITY 2A

Guide Question:
1. The two chains of nucleotides in a DNA molecule are held together by hydrogen bonds between
the bases. In DNA, cytosine forms three hydrogen bonds with guanine, and thymine forms two
hydrogen bonds with adenine.
2. The pairing of the bases produces a long, two-stranded molecule that is often compare to a zipper,
if you look at a zipper, the sides of the zipper represent the pairs of nitrogenous bases of the DNA.
3. DNA replication requires other enzymes in addition to DNA polymerase, including DNA primase,
DNA helicase, DNA ligase and topoisomerase.

Guide Question:
1. It resembles the complimentary strand that was not used.
2. It can be unzipped by RNA polymerase and make corresponding RNA that maybe translated
proteins required by the cell. This is important to keep the integrity of the DNA as the basis of heredity
but at time produce the products that are encoded in the genes.
3. RNA brings the information from the DNA, which is in the nucleus, and brings it to the cytoplasm
and serves as a template for protein synthesis.

Guide Question:
1. The complementary of the base pairing is essential in transcription and translation. The final
products coded by the DNA are RNA and proteins. Some of the DNA sequence are regulatory
sequences that do not code for RNA or proteins but are important in gene expression. Protein
synthesis is the basis of expression of hereditary characteristics in both structure and form.
2. Each codon specifies a particular amino acid that is to be placed in the polypeptide chain. There is
more than one codon for each amino acid.

REFLECTION
Amino acids and proteins are the building blocks of life. When proteins are digested or broken
down, amino acids are left. The human body uses amino acids to make proteins to help the body.
Phenylalanine: Phenylalanine is a precursor for the neurotransmitters  tyrosine ,  dopamine ,
epinephrine and norepinephrine. It plays an integral role in the structure and function of proteins and
enzymes and the production of other amino acids. Valine: Valine is one of three branched-chain
amino acids, meaning it has a chain branching off to one side of its molecular structure. Valine helps
stimulate muscle growth and regeneration and is involved in energy
production. Threonine: Threonine is a principal part of structural proteins such as collagen and
elastin, which are important components of the skin and connective tissue. It also plays a role in fat
metabolism and immune function. Tryptophan: Though often associated with causing drowsiness,
tryptophan has many other functions. It’s needed to maintain proper nitrogen balance and is a
precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates your appetite, sleep and
mood. Methionine: Methionine plays an important role in metabolism and detoxification. It’s also
necessary for tissue growth and the absorption of zinc and selenium, minerals that are vital to your
health.

What kind of Mutation is this? Deletion

Guide Question:
1. Nonsense
2. Point Mutation-silent Mutation. If there was no effect on the protein coded by the gene, then the
amino acid sequence must have been the same as the original sequence. Therefore, the mutation
must have been a point mutation resulting in a codon that encoded the same amino acid as the
original amino acid.
3. This sentence no longer makes sense. This is an example of a deletion resulting in a frame shift.

ACTIVITY 2
CHROMOSOMAL MUTATIONS
TRANSLOCATION DELETION INVERSION
1. How many 2 1 1
chromosomes are
involved?
2. How did you change Cut a part and attached Cut apart Cut a part, reversed
the original structure of it to another and reinserted into the
the chromosomes? chromosome chromosomes
3. Which condition/s of Either gain or loss of Loss of genetic material Either gain or loss of
chromosome material? genetic material during genetic material or no
the exchange process. loss or gain of genetic
material during the
process.

Guide Question:
1. The normal genetic content of the chromosome may be affected. Many diseases are caused by t
he effects of inherited genes. In most cases, there is only one small difference between the DNA
sequence in the defective gene and a normal one. This difference is enough to cause serious and
often fatal diseases.

MARK ANTHONY LEGASPO SCIENCE Week 4B

2. Gain or loss of chromosome material results in chromosomal mutations or aberrations; may also
result to Down’s syndrome, Klinefelter’s Syndrom, or Turner’s Syndrome. However, Cri-du-chat
Syndrome is due to loss of chromosome.
3. The possible effects of chromosomal mutations are medical problems, problems on growth and
development, genetic disorders, and even death.

REFLECTION
AREAS/ FIELDS IN IMPACTS
OUR SOCIETY
FOOD  Flavr Savr tomato with improved taste; seedless watermelon, tomatoes
and cantaloupes with modified ripening characteristics; protein-
enriched potatoes and corn enriched wth lysine and tryptophan.
 Corn and cotton plants with resistance to insects and other pest have
also been produced.
MEDICINE  Biotechnology introduces a new approach called biopharming or
molecular farming, ,in which plants and animals are genetically
modified to produce pharmaceutical compounds.
 Gene therapy is another application of genetic modification ,which
involves the identification and repair of mutated genes that caused
disease. Gene therapy is done by putting a healthy copy of a gene into
the cells of a person with a defective or mutated gene.
AGRICULTURE  Genetic engineering makes possible the induced mutation of bacteria
to produce chemicals called allelophatic agents, which can serves as
biopesticides and biopherbicides. These substances can be useful
alternatives to traditional methods of pest control.
 Biofertilizer are genetically modified microorganisms that are grown
symbiotically with crops.
ENVIRONMENT  Bioremediation generally refers to the use of biotechnology to solve
environmental problems, such as treatment and disposal of wastes,
which are major problems associated with industrialization.

REFLECTION:
For me, the most convincing evidence for evolution is the molecular biology. In molecular
biology, it compares the different genetic sequence of different organisms. If the genetic sequence of
the organisms is almost identical, it means that the organisms are related to each other. By
comparing the DNA sequence with another organism, scientist can identify which organism is closely
related and where it evolves from.
