FOURTH QUARTER PROJECT – SCIENCE 9

Activity Sheet on Momentum and Impulse

OBJECTIVES:

Solve word problems related to momentum and impulse and explore the application of the two concepts in
real life.

PART 1: Problem Solving

1. Calculate the momentum of a baseball that has a mass of 0.2 kg and is moving at a rate of 30 m/s to
the right. (RX4)
P = mv P= (0.2kg)(30 m/s) = 6kg • m/s

2. Automobile companies often test the safety of cars by putting them through a crash test to observe
the integrity of the passenger compartment. If an 1100-kg car is sent toward a cement wall with a
speed of 15 m/s, an impact force of 185,000 N stops the car, how long does it take before the car is
brought to stop? (RX4)
J = (Fnet)(change in time) = m (vf – vi)
J = (185,000)(change in time) = 1100 (15 m/s – 0 m/s)
("#$,&&&)(()*+,- /+ 0/1-) ("2$&&)
J= =
("#$,&&&) ("#$,&&&)

J = 0.089 s

3. A particle has a mass of 10 kg and a velocity of 5 m/s. What is the momentum of the particle? (RX4)
P = mv P = (10kg)(5 m/s) P = 50kg • m/s

4. An impulse of 20 kg·m/s acts on the particle in problem # 3, in the same direction as the velocity.
What is the final velocity of the particle? (RX4)

J = m (vf – vi) 20kg • m/s = 10 kg ( vf – 5 m/s)

20𝑘𝑔 • 𝑚/𝑠 10 𝑘𝑔 ( 𝑣𝑓 − 5𝑚/𝑠)
=
10 10
2 + 5 = 7 vf = 7 m/s

PART 2: Application

According to the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), the airbag in automobiles is one of the
most important vehicular safety innovations in the last decade. Since 1990, all car models are legally
required to have this safety feature. It provides crucial cushioning for the people inside the vehicle
during a crash. In what way, do momentum and impulse apply in this concept? (RX4)

Yes it do apply in this concept because cars are moving and you will get its velocity and when your car
crash the velocity will be at rest and you will see the force of how the car crashes into a cement wall.
