What I Know
Students are then presented with a pre-assessment task that aims to check what they
already know about the lesson to take.
What’s In
Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to harbor life. Our planet’s molten
nickel-iron core gives rise to an extensive magnetic field, which, along with the
atmosphere, shields us from harmful radiation coming from the Sun.
Identify the planets in the solar system based on the illustration presented in the module.
Identify the characteristics of the planet Earth that make it different form all the other
planets.
What’s New
Read the document presented in the module. Answer the following questions:
1. What are the factors that make the planet habitable?
2. What are the characteristics of planet Earth that makes it habitable?
What is It
Earth is the only place in the known universe confirmed to host life and is the only one
known for sure to have liquid water in the surface. These are reasons why planet earth is
a unique one: (1) It has liquid water; (2) Plate Tectonics and (3) It has atmosphere that
shelters it form the worst of the sun’s rays.
Earth is the only planet in the solar system that has a large amount of liquid water. About
70% of the surface of the Earth is covered by liquid or frozen water. Because of this, Earth
is sometimes called “blue planet”. Planet Earth is habitable because it has the right
distance from the sun. It is kept warm by an insulating atmosphere, and it has the right
chemical ingredients for life including water and carbon. It can provide water, oxygen,

useful biological products for human and has suitable weather and climate.
Earth, Venus and Mars may have similarities: (1)They are all terrestrial planets, made of
solid rocks and silicates; (2) They all have an atmosphere; (3) They all almost have the
same time to rate on their axes; (4) Earth and Mars both have water; (5) They all have
carbon dioxide; and (6) All have landforms. Earth, Venus and Mars have differences: (1)
Venus has no water; (2) Venus and Mars do not have oxygen; and (3) Earth has life
forms.
What I Have Learned
Read the summary of concepts discussed in the module.
What’s More
Analyze the presented data in the table to compare Earth to Venus and Mars.

Engagement Assessment
Answer the assessment to evaluate the level of mastery of the learning competency
identified. Refer to the key if necessary.
Assimilation Additional Activity
If given a chance to create a new planet, how would you describe it and what kind of
organisms are found in your planet? Refer to the activity/ template presented in your

Introduction What I Need to Know
After going through this module for Origin and Structure of the Earth (Subsystem),
students should be able to:
 determine the four subsystems of the Earth
 describe the characteristics of each subsystem
 trace the flow of matter and energy in the Earth’s subsystems
 express one’s internalized role as steward of the four subsystems concerning the
flow of matter and energy

Students are then presented with a pre-assessment task that aims to check what they
already know about the lesson to take.
What’s In
Earth is sometimes called the “water planet” or the “blue planet” because seas and bodies
of water cover more than two-thirds of its surface. Earth is the only planet in the solar
system with rain that falls from clouds, runs over the land and collects in extensive
oceans. It is also the only known planet that supports life.
Read the situation presented in the module about a certain adventure. List down the terms
that are used in the statement that reflect what made up the Earth and classify them if they
are air, water, land or with life.
What’s New
Analyze and label the picture presented in the module. Identify the physical characteristics
of the subsystem of the Earth.
What is It
Subsystems of the Earth
Atmosphere – the gaseous layer above the Earth’s surface primarily composed of
different gases such as nitrogen and oxygen
Biosphere – the zone of the Earth where all forms of life exist. This serves as the
ecosystem of all living and non-living organisms.
Development Geosphere – the solid part of the Earth which consist the entire planet from the center
of the core to the outer crust. It includes core, mantle and crust of the
Earth
Hydrosphere – the water part of the Earth that includes oceans and glaciers
What I Have Learned
Read the additional information about the four subsystems of the Earth.
What’s More
Given with the diagram presented in the module, how will you relate the connection of the
four subsystems of the Earth?
What I Can Do
The human population has increased rapidly since the 1700s. For most of human history,
there were fewer than half-billion people on Earth. In mid-2009, 6.7 billion people
Engagement inhabited our planet. Because of these, extensive pollution is everywhere, thus, as a
student, what can you do to save not only a particular system, but the Earth itself? Write
your answer on the “My Environmental To Do List”.
Assessment
Answer the assessment to evaluate the level of mastery of the learning competency
identified. Refer to the key if necessary.
Additional Activity
“Connect Me Spheres”: Analyze the interactions of the spheres after the onslaught of Taal
Volcano. Answer the following guide questions:
Assimilation 1. What sphere caused the event?
2. What are the effects of the event on one or more spheres?
3. What is the global implication of the event?
