Report No. 2017‐18/59
1.0 Introduction: ‐
A welfare Centre is likely to be constructed at Mhow. For knowing the safe bearing
capacity M/s kutumble Consultant & Engineering Pvt. Ltd., Indore (M.P.) approached to Rajmi
Geoexploration & Engineering Pvt. Ltd., Indore for exploration of soil/rock samples from one
borehole. RGEPL, Indore has explored the required bore. The Soil/rock samples extracted from
the borehole have been duly arranged in the core box and have been submitted in the
laboratory of Rajmi Geoexploration & Engg. Pvt. Ltd. The classifications of strata and
conduction of suitable tests for the determination safe bearing capacity below the existing
ground level to lay the foundations safely and economically has been undertaken by Rajmi
Geoexploration & Engg. Pvt. Ltd.
2.0 AIMS & SCOPE OF INVESTIGATION
The present soil investigation work has been assigned to M/S Rajmi Geoexploration &
Engineering Pvt. Ltd., Indore.
The proposed work includes the drilling of One borehole, conduction of Standard
Penetration Tests at 1.50 m intervals in soil only up to 3.0 m below the ground level, collection
of disturbed/undisturbed soil samples, Geological core logging and Engineering Classification of
the rock (if encountered) and to conduct the laboratory tests to ascertain the Safe Bearing
Capacity at location of the Welfare Centre. The engineering classification of the strata has been
done by the officials of M/s Rajmi Geoexploration & Engg. Pvt. Ltd, Indore.
The laboratory test comprised of the following:
Natural Moisture Content, Filed Density and Specific Gravity
Grain Size Analysis
Atterberg’s Limits (Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit & Shrinkage Limit)
Triaxial Compression Test
Free Swell Index
Grain Size Analysis along with Atterberg’s limits is used for soil classification, which is
also an indirect way of getting various properties of soil.
Report No. 2017‐18/59
Specific Gravity, In‐situ Density and Natural Moisture Contents are used to determine
the void ratio and degree of saturation of soil. The Differential Free Swell, Shrinkage Limit and
Swelling Pressure values indicate the expansive behavior of soil. The shear parameters are also
used to assess the safe bearing capacity of soil indirectly. These tests have been done on soil
samples collected from different depth of borehole. The properties of soil/rock explored from
borehole are tabulated in Table – 1. The soil profile is shown in Fig.1. The Grain Size Analysis
Curves are shown in Fig. 2 (a) & Fig. 2 (b). The Location of Borehole shown in Fig. 3
3.0 COMPUTATIONS OF SAFE BEARING CAPACITY
Various kinds of Shear tests are there but here we have performed the Direct Shear Test of
Unconsolidated – Undrained (UU) type to get shear parameters on collected sample. The Safe Bearing
Capacity is calculated as per IS: 6403‐ 1981 (determination of bearing capacity of shallow foundations).
For local and general shear failure the net safe bearing capacity is given as follows:
Qns = [C Nc Sc dc ic+q (Nq‐1) Sq dq iq+ ½ B γ Nγ dγ iγ W]/F (In case of General shear failure)
Qns = [2/3 C N’c Sc dc ic+q (N’q‐1) Sq dq iq+ ½ B γ N’γ dγ iγ W]/F (In case of local shear failure)
Where qns = Net Safe Bearing Capacity
C = Cohesion (for Non cohesive material C = 0)
Φ = Angle of internal friction
Φ’ = tan‐1(0.67 tan (Ø)) for local shear failure
γ = Average density of over burden
Nc,Nq,Nγ = Bearing Capacity factors for General Shear Failure
N’c,N’q,N’γ = Bearing Capacity factors for Local Shear Failure
Sc,Sq,Sγ = Shape factors
dc ,dq ,dγ = depth factors
ic ,iq ,iγ = inclination factors ( 1 in the case of vertical loads)
q = Effective surcharge at depth of” X” Mt below ground level.
W = Water Table correction factor is 0.50 (When WT is at base of footing)
B = Width of footing in m
F = Factor of safety
Report No. 2017‐18/59
At 2.00 m depth
c = 40 kPa, Φ =8.0°, D= 2.00 m, (assume a square footing of size B = 2.00 m)
Since strata is cohesive with SPT value of 8 at1.50 m and 22 at 3.0 m respectively considering
General Shear Failure the bearing capacity factors Nc Nq and Nγ shall be respectively 7.61, 2.11 and
0.91. Substitute in the equation we get qnu = 538.67.kN/m2. Using a factor of safety of 2.5, and further
applying correction for water table @ 50%, we get Qns = 107.73 kN/m2.
4.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
From the physical observations and based upon the tests results following are the
conclusions:
(1) The individual Isolated Footings may be provided at a depth of 2 m depth.
(2) The safe bearing capacity at this depth is recommended as 100 kN /m2.
