THE RISE OF TRADITIONAL

GAMES IN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
At the start of 2020, the world was confronted by a pandemic
in the form of COVID-19. It has brought this fast-moving world to a
standstill.
For children, it had major consequences for where, when, how
and with whom they can play. Closures of schools and playgrounds
have restricted spaces for play, while lockdown has limited the
amount of time that can be spent outdoors and prohibited close
contact with friends.
Stuck at home due to the pandemic, children have spent
excessive time in front of screens, from TVs to smartphones to
tablets. Children today spend significantly more time inside in front
of screens than they do outside playing.
Because of this alarming trend, we should recall some of the
traditional Filipino games that are worth playing, hoping to
encourage children to get involved in active play and to keep these
games alive.

Why is it important to preserve traditional games?

The name of traditional games also belong to the 'culture' as
well. When we talk about culture, it is something that we need to
preserve in order to maintain the harmony between the people.
Same goes to the traditional games. We need to preserve it so that
we could continue the tradition of these traditional games for the
next generations to come.
It is a need for them to learn and to know about the traditional
games so that they could learn the history and at the same time
learn to appreciate culture and arts of the traditional games. Other
than that, we also could ensure that the upcoming generation will
have the chance to recognize, know and play it so that they also
could be the part of the history and the culture of traditional games
itself.
