Assignment I for Water and Wastewater Engineering

Total point: 10 points

Submission date: After completing the chapters incorporated in this assignment (1 point penalty
for 1 day late)

Instruction: Take necessary assumptions

1) The following results were obtained for a wastewater sample taken at the head works to a
wastewater treatment plant. All the testes were performed using a sample size of 50 mL.
Determine the concentration of total solids, total suspended solids, total volatile solids,
volatile suspended solids and dissolved solids for the following data.

Item Weight, g
Tare mass of evaporating dish 53.5435
Mass of evaporating dish plus residue after evaporation at 105 OC 53.5765
Mass of evaporating dish plus residue after ignition at 550 OC 53.5515
Tare mass of Whatman GF/C Filter 1.5433
Mass of Whatman GF/C filter plus residue after drying at 105 OC 1.5533
Mass of Whatman GF/C filter plus residue after ignition at 550 OC 1.5457

2) Design manually cleaned bar screen with 20mm clear openings for 20 MLD average
sewage flow. The bars are made of flats 10mm x 40mm and inclination of the screen is
600 with the horizontal direction.
3) A grit chamber is designed to remove particles with a diameter of 0.2 mm, specific
gravity 2.65. Settling velocity for these particles has been found to be from 0.016 to
0.022 m/sec. Flow velocity of 0.3 m/sec will be maintained by proportionating weir.
Determine the channel dimensions for a maximum waste water flow of 50,000 m3/d.

4) The flow through flocculators processes 16,800 m3/d of water at 17OC. The paddles are
arranged longitudinally. The optimum Gt value has been found from jar tests to be
4.5x104 .
5) Design a suitable rectangular sedimentation tank for treating the sewage from a city
provided with an assured public water supply system, with maximum daily demand of 20
million litres per day. The detention time & flow velocity of sewage be 3 hrs and 0.3
m/min. with an effective depth of 3m.
6) Two million litres of water per day is passing through a sedimentation tank of 5m x 15m
x 3m find the detention time for the tank.
a. what is the average flow velocity through the tank?
b. Compute the overflow rate.
