2020… A Year Like No Other…

By Andy Yang 9G
Hello readers and welcome to… Oops sorry… Please wait a minute… Windows Starting…

Now that’s better. Hello everyone and welcome to my diary about 2020, a year that no computer
has ever experienced.

It started off way before 2020. I was given to this kid called Andy as a school laptop back in 2019. I
have to admit, he wasn’t a very good owner at first, I was damaged so many times. However, as time
passed, I felt that I was one of the lucky ones. Some of my fellow mates had stickers all over their
faces, blinding them. Others contracted viruses that made them sick so they had to get treated at
the hospital, which was called “IT”.

I could go on and on and on about that, but we really need to get to the point. This diary starts in
March of 2019, after Andy’s skiing trip in Japan and the most of Term 1, which is always smooth and
easy. Little did I know I was going to have my work cut out for me this year.

The world has changed dramatically. In fact, it has changed more than you can ever imagine.

It’s is mid-march now, and the world has a lot on its plate.

Around two months ago, a virus was reported to be in the city of Wuhan, China and barely, two
months later, the whole world is on its edge. Here down under in Australia, we are currently in a
lockdown. Things that have been taken for granted by Andy and his family have been restricted, or
worse, disallowed.

Toilet paper, tinned food and grains are being fought over in supermarkets, vanishing quicker than
supermarkets can stock them.

School too, has also changed, Andy has taken me into his workroom for online learning, using a
program called Microsoft Teams.

3 months later…
We are in another lockdown and our situation this time is dire. We now have over 100 cases of
COVID-19 (which stands for Coronavirus disease of 2019, as it first appeared in 2019) every day.
However, I still feel lucky considering many other countries who have thousands of cases every day.

Mid- July 2020

2 weeks later…
Online lessons have started up again for Term 3 amid this ever-increasing crisis. There is no point
trying to doomscrolling these days as there is news of death and sickness wherever you look. On the
other hand, Andy is relaxed about the lockdown. He has recently downloaded a program called
Bluestacks where he can play games while in class. Cheeky!

Mid- August 2020

1 month later…
Is this lockdown ever going to end??? I’ve been sick for the last couple of weeks and I currently have
a very high temperature. This is probably because Andy has been learning online while playing
games and also streaming Star Wars: The Clone Wars all at the same time! I’ve already fainted once
or twice from this immense pressure. PLEASE Andy!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

Late- August 2020

2 weeks later…
I’m feeling much better now, all thanks to Andy, who has developed a system to lower my
temperature while multitasking himself. Lately, Andy has taken to dripping droplets of cold water
onto my forehead to keep me cool while not damaging my circuits. The droplets are then
evaporated and replenished my Andy. I have to admit, it’s a great system! Thanks Andy!

Early- October 2020

1 month later…
Finally, we are getting less cases of this despicable virus every day and the lockdown is drawing to a
close, meaning “I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.” Not that I know what it means.

Late- October 2020

4 weeks later…
We are out of lockdown and back in actual school!!! Andy has received his grades during the
lockdown period and has gotten great marks, don’t ask me how! Meanwhile, he is studying hard to
get into Melbourne High, a selective entry school. I really hope he gets in!!! As this terrible ordeal is
concluding, I must sadly call an end to this diary (or else I’ll have no more storage!). I sincerely hope
all you readers have had a rollercoaster time reading my experiences during this incredible year.
That’s it everybody, I have to go!
