Name 3: Monta, Piolo B.
Geometry

I. Instructions: Give what is asked below. Work independently and consult only your
instructor with regards to the questions below. Write legibly or you can use MS word and
submit in Canvas. Show all necessary solutions and indicate your final answer; NO
SOLUTIONS, NO CREDIT. Cheating in any form shall be subjected to disciplinary action.

Please do as indicated. (Minimum of 50 words for item 1- 5 and don’t forget to write your
references.). (50 points)

1. State a Euclidean axiom and provide an example. (Real world application)

The Euclidean Axiom: “The whole is greater than the part.”

Real world application:

The city of stars, Quezon city which has its population at about 3 million, which is
then part of a greater whole, the National Capital Region (NCR) or Metro Manila
which then has a total population of 12,877,253 according to the 2015 National
Census. Thus, we can determine that NCR or Metro Manila is greater than the part,
which is Quezon City in terms of population.

The whole of NCR / Metro Manila (12,877,253) > Quezon City (3 Million) (Part)

2. State a Euclidean postulate and provide an example. (Real world application)

The Euclidean Postulate: “One can draw a straight line from any point to any point.”

Real world application:

The installment of a curtain pole involves inserting the pole from a metal bracket
from point a (metal bracket 1) to point b (metal bracket 2). If you then insert the pole,
it will make a straight line from point a, to point b.

3. State other possible applications of elliptic geometry not stated in the material. (Real world
application)

Elliptic Geometry

Real world application:

When slicing a potato into quarter slices for a delicious dish, the slices would then
intersect with one another to show the concept of elliptic geometry that all straight
lines on a sphere intersects therefore no parallel lines are to be found.

4. State other possible applications of hyperbolic geometry not stated in the material. (Real
world application)

The application of hyperbolic geometry is possible in the world of videogames as well.

It is evident in the game HyperRogue wherein it takes place on the hyperbolic plane
with a grid that consists of hexagons and heptagons, straight lines that diverge but do
not cross each other, and triangles whose angles add up to less than 180 degrees. Not
only that, but the game is inspired by the works of M.C. Escher as well. The creator
of the game claims that no previous understanding of hypergolic geometry is needed
for HyperRogue will be the one helping the player learn about it (Zeno Rogue, 2020).

5. Referring to figure 1, find the following given that ∠1 = 40° and ∠5 = 150°
a. angle opposite to ∠1 = 40°
b. angle opposite to ∠4 = 30°
c. TRUE or FALSE: ∠6 < ∠2 = TRUE
d. TRUE or FALSE: ∠1 + ∠2 + ∠3 = ∠4 + ∠5 + ∠6 = FALSE
SOLUTION:

∠1 = 40° ∠4 = 30°

∠2 = 40° ∠5 = 30°

+ ∠3 = 140° ∠6 = 150°

2. In 100 words essay, explain item #1 (10 points).

The table entitled Different Body Temperatures in Fahrenheit shows an interval of 1 (see
the solution). Using class intervals, we will see the frequency of body temperatures each per class
using the table. The body temperatures (in Fahrenheit) of Class 1 (96.3 - 97.3) have a frequency
of 3. For class 2 (97.4 - 98.4) has a frequency of 14. Class 3(98.5 - 99.5) has a frequency of 12. for
class 4 (99.6 - 100.6) has a frequency of 0. Lastly, class 5 (100.7 - 101.7) has a frequency of 1. Of
all classes, class 2 is more frequent in terms of body temperatures, and on the contrary, Class 4 is
the least frequent in body temperature.
