EPISODE 2: LEARNERS’ CHARACTERISTICS AND NEEDS

INSTRUCTION:
WORKSHEETS #2
Batch 1
Do the following tasks:

1.Observe 3 groups of learners from different levels (pre-school, elementary, high school).

2. Describe each of the learners based on your observations.

3. Validate your observation by interviewing the learners.

4. Compare them in terms of their interests and needs.

OBSERVATION GUIDE: Write your detailed observational report based on the following aspects:

Physical

1. Observe their gross motor skills. How they carry themselves. How they move, walk, run, go upstairs, etc.
2. Are gross movements clumsy or deliberate/smooth?
3. How about their fine motors skills? Writing, drawing, etc.

Social

1. Describe how they interact with teachers and other adults.

2. Note how they also interact with peers. What do they talk about? What are their concerns?

Emotional

1. Describe the emotional disposition or temperament of the learners. (happy, sad, easily cries, mood-shifts)
2. How do they express their wants/needs? Can they wait?
3. How do they handle frustrations?
4. Describe their level of confidence as shown in their behavior. Are they self-conscious?

Cognitive

1. Describe their ability to use words to communicate their ideas. Note their language proficiency.
2. Describe how they figure out things. Do they comprehend easily? Look for evidence of their thinking skills.
3. Were there opportunities for problem solving? Describe how did they show problem solving abilities.

ANALYSIS
Write the most salient developmental characteristics of the learners you observed. Based on
these characteristics, think of implications for the teacher.

REFLECTIONS
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your own experiences when you
were their age? What similarities or differences do you have with their learners you
observed?
-Yes, I was able to recall some of my own experiences when I was at their age. Some
similarities that I can see is that I love sports, I tend to communicate a lot with my friends who
are close with me. However during my elementary years, I am a very shy person therefore I
don’t talk a lot. Some differences I see from the learners I observed is that they tend to speak
English fluently with their teachers. They also share lot of things they see in social media.
Today students are more vocal with their feelings and they communicate comfortably with
their teachers.
2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did she/he
help or not help you with your needs (physical, emotional, social, cognitive)? How did it
affect you?
-There was this teacher who always encourage us to take up space. She is the most talented
teacher that I met in my whole life that’s why I wanted to be like her when I was a kid. She is
one of the best teacher I know, she was able to cheer me up and encourage me to make
friends. During my elementary years, I don’t have that much confidence to talk with other
people nor to do things and perform well in my school. However, she encouraged me and
help me build my confidence. I can say that with her help, I was able to do well in my classes.
3. Which is your favorite theory of development. How can this guide you as a future
teacher?
-My favorite theory of development was the Psychosocial Developmental theory of Erik
Erickson. As a future teacher, this theory can guide me to handle students as they grow up.
With this theory, I can create a classroom environment where each student feels appreciated
and is comfortable with learning new things and building relationship with peers without fear
just like what Hooser (2010) have said. In addition, I can also use this to connect with my
students and give what they need, which is encouragement and care.
Having a knowledge with this theory enables me to focus on the strengths and encourage the
students to be confident.
4. Share your other insights here.
-From this activity, I have learned that there are certain needs ad characteristics of the
learners from the different levels. In this different levels, the teachers must give the needs of
the students in order for them not to have any problem in their development. As a future
teacher, I have learned that student have different characteristics. We must know how to
guide them properly and because we teachers are the number one person that they trust and
we have a great impact toward their development.
