Definition:
In mathematics, a geometric progression, also known as a geometric sequence, is a sequence of
numbers. After the first term, each term is found by multiplying the previous one by a fixed, non-
one number called the common ratio.
Situation:
Archie and Althea is experimenting with the physics of a bouncing ball. Archie drops the ball.
The ball’s first bounce’s height is 12 feet, the next time it bounces, its highest bounce is 6 feet.
Find the remaining height of its bounce until its 6th bounce.
Table 1: Height of the ball every bounce

Height of
the ball
every 12 6

(ft.)

Solution:
a2
First we need to find the common ratio by using the formula r =
a1
6
r=
12
1
r = ∨0.5
2
If r= 0.5, then the common difference is 0.5
Now that we that we found our common ration, we can now find the remaining height of its
bounce until its 6th bounce by using the formula a n=a1 r n−1

If r=0.5 and a2=6, what is the value of a3?

a. a3= a1(rn-1)
a3= 12 (0.5)3-1
a3= 12 (0.5)2
a3= 12 (0.25)
a3= 3

If a3= 3, then the height of the ball on the 3rd bounce is 3ft.
If r=0.5 and a3=3, what is the value of a4?
b. a4= a1(rn-1)
a4= 12 (0.5)4-1
a4= 12 (0.5)3
a4= 12 (0.125)
a4= 1.5

If a4= 1.5, then the height of the ball on the 4th bounce is 1.5ft.
If r=0.5 and a4=1.5, what is the value of a5?
c. a5= a1 (rn-1)
a5= 12 (0.5)5-1
a5= 12 (0.5)4
a5= 12 (0.0625)
a5= 0.75

(ft.)
If a5= 0.75, then the height of the ball on the 5th bounce is 0.75ft.
If r=0.5 and a5=0.75, what is the value of a6?
d. a6= a1 (rn-1)
a6= 12 (0.5)6-1
a6= 12 (0.5)5
a6= 12 (0.03125)
a6= 0.375

Height of
the ball

(ft.)
If a6= 0.375, then the height of the ball on the 6th bounce is 0.375ft.
Now that we completed the table, we can now solve for the sum of a geometric sequence by
a 1( 1−r n )
using the formula Sn=
1−r

a 1 ( 1−r n )
Sn =
1−r
12(1−0.56 )
Sn=
1−0.5
12 ( 0.984375 )
Sn=
0.5
11.8125
Sn=
0.5
Sn=23.625

If Sn= 23.625, then the sum of height of the ball every bounce is 23.625ft.
