Discussion Unit 2

Discuss the findings of your data collection experience. What was the total duration of

time off task and calculate the percentage of time off task for this session? What was the

average latency recorded for this student to begin working independently following a

teacher's instruction? Based on your observation and data, how would you report the

intensity or magnitude of this student’s off-task behavior?

Kailyn’s total off-task time is 165 seconds. She displayed the tendency for such behavior

for but five minutes during the time of math activity. Off-task behavior is evaluated by the time

m
er as
length the behavior lasts. The behavior lasted longer than 5 seconds so it will be known as an off-

co

task period. The total percentage for the off-task time, in this case, was 54.14%. Latency is

o.
described as: a measure of the elapsed time between the onset of a stimulus and a subsequent

response (Cooper, 2007). The time between direction and when the behavior was displayed

had to be recorded. Upon observation, I noticed that the first measurement of latency was

about 26.5 seconds and only 4.2 seconds for the second. Through observation and data

recording I have discovered that the intensity of Kailyn’s off-task behavior is on the higher

side. The video shows that she took 27 seconds to act on the teacher’s instructions. Then she

spent 23 seconds doing her work and 35 seconds looking around.

Explain how the operational definition provided contributed to your observation and

data recording experience. Is there anything that could have made the definition more

clear for observation purposes?

It was easier to understand the target behavior that I was looking for because the

operational definition that was given in this observation helped data recording. The definition

explaining that off-task behavior lasts more than 5 seconds was also helpful. Another

advantage that the definition provided that helped me while recording the data was that it

mentioned that attention should be paid to challenging behavior. It would have been really

helpful if the definition stated what needs to be looked for when the timer was stopped.

Although we were aware that the timer should be stopped when the student was working.

However, it was unclear if she was writing her work or she was just scribbling.

What challenges did you have with measuring the duration and/or latency of these target

behaviors? How might you alleviate similar challenges in the future?

I had some difficulty while making sure that I was identifying the off-task behavior

correctly It was a little hard to discern what behavior would be characterized as off-task and what

is disruptive behavior. I also had to keep rewinding the video because I was stopping at the

wrong time because it seemed as if Kailyn was starting to write but then she delayed it a little.
