Properties & Testing of Structural Materials

(CE 306)

Prof. Dr. Mohammad Al-Shannag

1
Control of Material Properties

•All branches of engineering, especially those dealing with

structures and machines are concerned with materials
• Materials properties must be determined by tests
• Settlement of disputes regarding failures and substandard
quality calls for physical tests

The following subjects are basic in the study of materials testing

1-Technique of testing
(operation, apparatus is widely used…)
2
2-physical and mechanical principles involved in the testing apparatus and
procedure
(are the assumed conditions satisfied)
3-theory of measurements
(precision of results)
4-variability of materials
(number of tests)
5-interpretation of results
(significance of test results …)
reliability of the test data

3
Engineering Materials

Principal materials used in building structures and machines

are:
Metals, woods, Portland cement concretes, bituminous
mixtures, clay products, masonry materials and plastics.

Principal Function of constructional materials is to develop:

-Strength
-Rigidity
-Durability adequate to the service for which they are
intended

4
Properties of Engineering Materials

5
Most Important Mechanical Testing In Particular :

Strength: Resistance to failure of entire piece of

material, a small part of it or even its surface

Failure
1-rupture
2-excessive deformation

6
Selection of a material:

Serviceability is the ultimate criterion in a choice of materials.

One important object of materials testing is to aid in predicting
or ensuring the desired performance of materials under service
conditions.

In the selection of materials, designers have two sources of

information:
1) Knowledge or performance of materials in actual service
2) Results of tests made to supply data on performance.

7
Selection Of Materials Regarding Design and
Manufacture Depends on:

1-kind of materials available

2-properties of materials
3-service requirements
4-relative economy
5-method of manufacture or processing
6-methods of specification
7-methods of testing and inspection
