Daily Logbook
You need to keep a record of what you are doing at work. When your College Mentors visits, he/she
will ask to see and review your activities as entered in the daily logbook. The logbook will be graded and
it will help you prepare for your report and Oral defense. Your Company Supervisor must sign your
logbook regularly and your attendance record daily.

The log book will be handed to you separately by the Work Experience Coordinator or Faculty Mentor.

The following information is a guide to what you should write in your log book:

 Background information about the Company e.g.

o Company History
o Explanation of the business
o Company Structure
o Details of the Departments where you worked
o People worked with and their designations
 Tasks performed including evidence. Examples of evidence can be any of the following:
o Company Supervisor has signed the record as a true account of activity
o College Mentor observes the you performing the task
o Evidence of the work carried out – e.g. photos, documents produced etc.
o Note: Collecting evidence should not interfere with the student’s or any
employee’s work; nor should it infringe on confidentiality.

 Information sources, equipment, software used

 Knowledge and skills you learned in the College and used on your job
 The new skills you have learned

 Any problems and how you solved them

 Summary on Health and Safety related to your Work Experience

 Reflective feedback
o What you liked the work/tasks you did
o Things you liked about your job/Company
o How you felt about your work performance
o Comment on alignment between college knowledge and skills and workplace
needs / demands
o Recommendations for yourself, the College and the Company

On Monday, we started the meeting that was made by Water Quality Assurance
Department. They explained demand forecasting and how the historical database for water
made by the system performance section is expended at many places which are related to
distribution network from the reports of TRANSCO. An analysis for areas is done by SPS
system regarding to the database that created before. In addition, Water demand forecasts
can be prepared regarding to the actual water consumption and attend curve. Additional
water demand is calculated as well to the above calculated demands to have the final water
demand forecasts. From the daily demand notifications that made by O&M team, TRANSCO
receive notifications of the demand forecasts requirements to meet the needs.

Every engineer in ADDC departments has a role, so the Water Quality Assurance engineer
has the responsibility of reviewing the water quality test results, preparing the
correspondence for SPS and letters to RSB and other bodies, assuring the test results entered
in Water Quality Regulations Reporting System (WQRRS), and checking the water quality
parameters compliance & sampling compliance by generating reports from WQRRS.

After that, they discussed about the recycled water, there are three major sewerage
treatment plants producing recycled water for ER&ER and they are Mafraq, Al Wathba 1 & 2.
Distribution network can be divided into different water quality regions based on population
and quantity of water being distributed. The regions are Central that has 27 distribution
zones, Eastern that has 43 distribution zones, and Western with 13 zones with a total of 83
distribution zones.

Department of Energy is look for the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) standards of
drinkable water that made by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology
(ESMA) or World Health Organization’s water quality recommendations.

Finally, Water Quality Assurance Department face some difficulties to have:

 Accurate accounting of water quantities entering ADDC’s network: Interface Metering

Facilities are to be constructed.

 Effective utilization of recycled water during Fridays also: Operational coordination

with customers required.

In today’s meeting, Hardware and Telecom Department explained the Hardware for the
elements. PLC or the Programmable Logic Controller is programmed by the ladder logic which
is related to the hardwired relay logic that PLC are replaced.

Next, they presented for us about the jet pipe servo valve operating principle. The
hydraulic oil enters the spray pipe through the filter directs the small fluid flow to the two
receivers, and each receiver is connected to one end of the second stage reel. All forces on
the second reel of stages are equal and it remains at the zero position. When the electrical
input signal is applied to the torque motor coil, electromagnetic force is generated. This force
causes the armature and jet tube assembly to rotate about the armature's pivot point,
causing more fluid to impinge on one receiver than the other. The pressure difference
generated between the end chambers of the spool activates the movement of the spool,
which in turn opens the second-stage port, causing fluid to flow into and out of the dual-port
control valve (A and B) according to the direction of the spool. The direction of movement of
the spool is opposite to the direction of rotation of the injection pipe. When the spool moves,
the feedback spring generates a force in the injection tube that is opposite to the force of the
torque motor.

The spool continues to move until the force generated by the feedback spring equals the
force generated by the torque motor. Then the position of the jet tube returns to the center
of the two receivers. Typically, a small pressure difference is maintained at both ends of the
spool to overcome the Bernoulli flow force that tends to close the valve and the force of the
feedback spring. The spool displacement is proportional to the control current in the torque
motor. As the spool moves, fluid is proportionally in and out of the second stage control ports
(A and B). When the input signal to the torque motor changes in amplitude and polarity, the
second stage valve core precisely follows the signal and measures the fluid accordingly.

The last meeting of this week was with Telecommunication and Hardware Department. It
was about the activities of the department. Preparing the online data from the field
equipment related to the maintainability and expandability of the SCADA components is the
responsibility of Hardware Department. In addition, it forms the interface with the network
department and expansion projects, when necessary, with the boards, consultants and
contractors related to ADWEA, TRANSCO, ADDC. The hardware part also maintains SCADA
components such as RTU, DC system and SCMS by performing regular preventive and
corrective maintenance. SCMS all work related to the SCMS system in the initial stage. RTU
All work related to the following RTUs: Master Station, Switch Station, Substation, and RMUs.

In addition, there are some responsibilities of the telecommunication section, so they

must spread secure and highly reliable communication infrastructure to have a reliable grid
network over the range of operating limits. Also, the communication tool is designed to
provide communication services between stations such as primaries, switching stations,
substations, packages substations, and master station in Abu Dhabi.

RTU has work related to it such as:

1. Works related to integration of substations:

2. Corrective maintenance
3. Preventive maintenance
