Ore Shenzen

VLOC / Valemax Ore carrier ( Bulk Carrier )

It can carry up to 400,000 tons of iron ore.
One of biggest bulk carrier ever built.
 OOCL Hongkong
 It can carry 21,000 TEU – means 21,000 20 ft
containers
 With a length of about 400m
SEAM 213
Cargo Handling and Stowage of Non-
Dangerous Goods and Inspection

 Chapter VI 0f Solas Convention

 Carriage of cargoes
Learning Outcome :

Explain the effect of heavy lift to the seaworthiness and

stability of the ship
 Definitions :

Seaworthy - a ship is deemed to be seaworthy when she

is reasonably fit in all aspects to encounter the
ordinary perils of the seas of the adventure insured.

Heavy lift cargo - is classified as indivisible items

weighing over few tons up to over a thousand tons, and
have widths and/or heights that exceed 100 meters.
Specialty vehicles, vessels and equipment is needed to
safely and effectively transport these items via land, air
or sea.
Heavy lift carrier
- a vessel designed to move very large loads that cannot
be handled by normal ships.

Semi-submersible ships that take on water ballast to

allow the load—usually another vessel—to be floated
over the deck, whereupon the ballast is jettisoned and
the ship's deck and cargo raised above the waterline.
 Movement of the center of gravity

 Loading- the center of gravity will move

towards the weight being loaded.

 Unloading – the center of gravity will move

away from the weight being discharged.

 Shifting – The center of gravity will move

towards and the same direction of the
weight being shifted.
 When a weight is suspended by ship’s gear the center
of gravity of the that will move to the point of
suspension. The effect is the same as loading the
weight high at that position.
 A heavy lift carrier displaces 10000 tons has initial KG
of 7.5m and KM of 7.9m. 200 tons of heavy cargo will be
loaded from the quay 10.0m starboard off the center line.
The head of the derrick to its maximum extent is 28m
above the keel. Solve the following assuming that KM will
remain constant.

 A. The Metacentric height (GM) when the weight is

suspended.
 B. Metacentric height when the weight is loaded on the
deck (KG=15m).
 C. Metacentric height when the weight is loaded in the
lower hold (KG=3m)
 D. Will the ship remain stable and seaworthy when the
weight is suspended by ship’s gear? Justify your answer.
A.
GM = -0.002 m

B.
GM = 0.25 m

C.
GM = 0.49 m
 Will the ship remain stable and seaworthy when the
weight is suspended?
When the ship is at port the stowage location of the
heavy lift cargo is very vital. The transverse and
longitudinal stability are the paramount importance.

Very careful precaution must be taken when loading and

unloading specially very heavy cargo.
 When at sea :
 Lashing should be checked at an interval of time when
underway.

 Loose lashing must be made tight.

 If the cargo will run loose it will destroy other cargoes
and ship structure and the ship might be capsize
because of the off center weight caused by it.
