SITUATION
About 69% of the world's fresh water is stored on glaciers but
because of the human activities that cause global warming, glaciers
are rapidly melting. If this continues, all the remaining glaciers will
melt before the year 2100. Additionally, it has a great contribution to
the rising sea levels, which increases coastal erosion and elevates
storm surges that creates strong hurricanes and typhoons.
Disturbingly, if all these glaciers will melt, the global sea level would
rise approximately 70 meters (230 feet), flooding every coastal city
on the planet which may cause a billion-dollar disaster. Ocean
currents will continue to disrupt weather patterns as well as affect the
fisher industries as warmer waters change where and when fish
spawn. Wildlife like walrus and polar bears will be extinct as a result
of the changes in their habitat. Furthermore, glacierized areas cover
𝑦 = 600 000(1.071773463)𝑡
over 15 million square kilometers of the world's land, and today, it is
declining by more than 10% every 10 years. With this, how many
glacierized areas in squared kilometers will melt in the year 2030?
Refer to the data given below.
It is presented on the solution that in the year 2030, 1 200 000.005 square kilometers of glacierized
areas will melt. It indicates that we only have 8 999 999.995 squared kilometers of glacierized areas after
the year 2030, and today, it is drastically melting by more than 10% every 10 years. With this, it is expected
that before the year 2100 all glacierized areas will melt. As a result, the global sea level will rise by
approximately 70 meters that will cause floods and billion-dollar destruction. We cannot stop the melting of
glaciers due to other factors however we can help prevent it from becoming worse. Here are few programs
and ways that is instituted for this problem:
Programs:
• Birth Tree Program: This is a special program that requires parents to plant trees every time they
have birthdays and/or they give life to a newborn.
• Dead but Alive Program: For every tree that gets killed (dead), it is a must to plant a replacement
guaranteed that the person who chopped down the tree will be responsible for taking care of the new
seedling as well (alive).
• GLACIERS: Let Them Not Melt: is a campaign to call for awareness about the possible threats of the
glaciers once they meltdown. The main action of this campaign is by spreading infographics with the
use of the prominent social media platforms—Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. Educating
people regarding the numerous factors that contribute to the meltdown of the glaciers will greatly
contribute to its prevention. As a youth, we may not have the means to create a drastic impact to
save the glaciers but in our little ways and knowledge, we strive to spread the information until it
reaches the door of someone with the power and capability to do so. More so, by educating people,
we may start to create even small changes in their lifestyles that may stop contributing to the
meltdown of the glaciers.
What is the contribution of your answer in the prediction to resolve the environmental problem?
This study can be an immense help not only to the students or the public but also to professional
researchers that are making studies and predictions on how our planet is drastically changing. Aside from
that, our prediction will serve as an eye-opener to humankind that if we will continuously do the activities
that contributed to global warming, we will be the ones to suffer in the future. To prevent this from happening,
simple practices such as planting trees, walking when your destination is near, conserving electricity, avoid
burning plastics, and cooperating with campaigns about stopping global warming are a great help. For
deforestation, greenhouse gases, and other industrial activities of humankind are the main of global warming
which causes numerous deaths to different species.
