I. INTRODUCTION
1. General

EC Structural Composites, Inc. is the Philippines’ leading structural retrofitting company. Our
extensive business collaboration with international organizations enables us to acquire and employ
advanced technology and materials in the repair, rehabilitation and re-strengthening of various
structures made of concrete, masonry, steel and timber.

What started in the year 2000 as a specialty contractor that focused exclusively in structural
retrofitting has now become a reputable enterprise that also succeeded in the areas of structural
investigation, materials supply, construction and general contracting services. Our strict adherence
to quality and standards sets by both our clients and our industry continually draws diverse
customers for us.

ECSCI also offer Structural Investigation of Buildings, Bridges, Piers, and other structures
under Technical Services Department (TSD). Structural Investigation is important to fully assess the
structure if it is structurally determinate or if it is subject for retrofitting. To check if the construction
of the building is fit for the purpose it was built for, to check the adequacy, to check if the structure
has any defects or cracks to verify the integrity of the structure, Structural integrity and other
components of the structure.

Structural investigation has a various scope of works specifically Rebar Scanning, Concrete
Coring, Rebar Extraction, Rebound Hammer, Foot Improvement and As- Builting.

II. METHODOLOGY AND SCOPE OF WORKS

This guideline tackles all about structural investigation that will help us to ensure proper and
effective way to execute the job. These tests shall be carried out carefully by skilled technicians and
shall be supervised by Project-in charge.

1. REBAR SCANNING

1.1. General

ECSCI uses HILTI PS 200 Ferro Scan system which has the capability of detecting
reinforcement bars, measuring the depth of concrete cover and determining the diameter and
position of reinforcing bars on embedded concrete without going destructive method.

Rebar scanning is also essential for other structural test to be conducted specifically in
concrete coring; it is used to determine the location of steel reinforcements in order to be
avoided during the coring process and to avoid damaging the concrete coring equipment.

The test is performed were in accordance to equipment manual of the HILTI PS 200 Ferro
Scan. The report of this procedure includes the following:

i. Spacing of Horizontal and Vertical Bars

ii. Diameter of horizontal and vertical bars
iii. Concrete cover

1.2. Methodology of Use:

1.2.1.Surface Preparation

1.2.1.1. Identify the desired location, place a mark on the surface, and afterwards
clean the area free from any foreign objects.
1.2.1.2. A reference grid pattern must be fixed at the center of the marking, use
adhesive tape to secure the grid.

1.2.2.Scanning Proper

1.2.2.1. Place the scanner on the starting line of the grid. Start moving the scanner
to the desired location horizontally and vertically. Completing all direction of grid
lines
1.2.2.2. Transferring data from the scanner to the monitor using infrared by simply
keeping the monitor and scanner close together.
1.2.2.3. Remove the reference grid pattern and proceed to the next location.

1.3. Equipment:

2. CONCRETE CORING

2.1. General

ECSCI uses HILTI DD 160 or HILTI DD 120 Coring machine with the help of HILTIPS 200
Ferro Scan to avoid hitting the steel reinforcements of a certain concrete structure to obtain
intact core samples.

The extracted cores were extracted from different concrete structures specified by our
Structural Engineer; it is also properly labeled to preserve the good condition of cores to test
properly.

The core samples shall be extracted by using cylindrical diamond drill. The extracted
specimens shall be tested by cylindrical concrete compressive strength test based on ASTM C-42;
is the standard test method for obtaining and testing core samples. The compressive strength is
performed in the laboratory. The diameter of core samples that were subjected to compressive
strength test were at least three times the nominal maximum size of coarse aggregate in the
core sample. The core sample shall have a diameter height ratio of 1:1.

The report of compressive strength test for core samples includes the following:

i. Identification number of core samples

ii. Diameter of concrete core
iii. Length after capping
iv. Cross-sectional Area
v. Maximum compressive load
vi. Compressive strength

2.2. Methodology of Use:

2.2.1. Surface Preparation

2.2.1.1. Identify the desired location, place a mark on the surface, and afterwards
clean the area free from any foreign objects.
2.2.1.2. Secure the area with caution tape or polysack if necessary.
2.2.1.3. Rebar Scan the desired location to ensure safe drilling.

2.2.2. Coring Proper

2.2.2.1. From the marking measure 32 cm away. For the anchor drilling, after placing
of anchor bolt for the fixing coring stand.
2.2.2.2. Set the 3-inch diameter core bit at the coring stand and align onto the
marking
2.2.2.3. Connect the water and electric supply, make sure the coring machine is
aligned and balance, then start drilling.
2.2.2.4. Drill 100 mm depth, after carefully extract the concrete sample from the
structure.
2.2.2.5. Make sure that the sample is not disturbed; cover it with rags and safe keep.

2.2.3. Core Restoration

2.2.3.1. Mix the concrete mortar, make enough amount for the hole
2.2.3.2. Using a steel palette, fill the hole with mortar evenly.
2.2.3.3. Clean the area as you go.
