What Is Commercial Art?

Have you ever thought about the logo on the wrapper of your favorite candy bar
or the advertisements you see on billboards and in magazines? Someone
designed those images and labels to help sell products. They're examples of
commercial art.
In the most basic sense, commercial art is imagery created for advertising or
marketing purposes. Commercial artists create art used to sell products, like
advertisements found in magazines, on social media, and other outlets. It's art
that's mass-produced and meant to sell things, to raise the visibility of products,
or to convey a specific message. Sometimes a book illustration is considered
commercial art. Also, you'll sometimes see the term graphic design, which
means using words and images to create advertisements, used in reference to
commercial art.
Commercial art, often called advertising art, is used to sell goods and services.
The commercial art definition differs from fine art, which exists for its own sake.
There are a few specific careers one can pursue in commercial art, and many of
these require the completion of a degree program in commercial art or a similar
area.

Commercial art is the art of creative services, referring to art created for
commercial purposes, primarily advertising. Commercial art traditionally includes

displays to promote sale or acceptance of products, services, or ideas.

is different from fine art, which exists for its own sake. There are a few specific

By commercial art we mean every artistic expression produced in series and

aimed at consumer needs. It is made with very heterogeneous techniques and
materials that can range from printing techniques to digital ones. It focuses on
the talent of their author with respect to his technical skill and includes
expressions such as graphics, branding, the creation of logos, illustrations
reproduced in series and advertising campaigns. Precisely for these reasons, it
contrasts with the fine arts that instead claim the uniqueness of art and favor the
technical talent of their author. In the words of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein:

Advertising graphics are understood to be graphics serving a practical visual

purpose. This is usually generated by graphic designers (today graphic
designer). These include, but are not limited to, book graphics, official
printmaking, typeface and typography, banknotes, stamps, movie posters,
signets, bookplates and advertising graphics. A sub-area is also the opportunity
graphic. In addition, the sector includes almost all computer graphics. In contrast
to her, original artistic artwork and the artistic use of computer graphics are part
of media art.

Skill:

Most commercial artists have the ability to organize information and knowledge
of fine arts, visualization and media. It is commonly used for advertising goods
and services. Fine art, on the other hand, is for the artist. Commercial artists
creatively think of ways to entice the viewer with digital art and photography.
Communication is often vital in this field. Usually, the art department is relatively
small, consisting of art directors, perhaps an assistant director, and a small staff
of design and product workers. Commercial artists work a variety of situations
doing many things in the artistic world such as advertisement, illustration and
animation. Commercial artists should have skills in free-hand drawing and
painting, experience using graphic design and editing software, and a basic
knowledge of advertising principles. Commercial Art is usually made for mass
exposure and distribution. Commercial art creates a way to show people the
product or service by using an image that may catch one’s eye. This is one way
businesses are promoting and advertising their products and services.
Commercial art applies artistic principles to a variety of fields. Commercial artists
design advertisements, logos, billboards, brochures, book covers, product
packaging and other similar artwork. Their work is often used to sell, promote,
explain, narrate and inform.

Commercial artists can specialize in graphic design and illustration, among other
areas. Illustrators create images for use in books, magazines and stationery.
Graphic designers create artwork and layouts for books, newspapers,
magazines, television, product packaging and the Internet. Graphic design
professionals often work in advertising, marketing or related fields.

In copyright terms, a commercial graphic is a work of applied art (artwork) in

which more creative height must be achieved than in other types of work. As a
result, logos do not fall under copyright as long as their design does not
significantly exceed the average and commonplace. However, they can be
registered as a design if they have a peculiarity, that is, if they produce a different
impression than a previously designed logo.

Who Makes Commercial Art?

Unlike fine art where ideas originate in the artist's head and the goal is self-
expression or perhaps making a personal statement, commercial art is for
external audiences who are often potential consumers of products. Think about
things like labels on food products, posters for sporting events or concerts, or the
logo for your favorite sportswear or tech company. Commercial artists and
graphic designers were hired to come up with those images.
Fine artists and commercial artists often use similar tools and materials. But
unlike someone who makes fine art, a commercial artist creates art for paying
clients. When the work in completed, it may be seen in many magazines or on
many labels, but the artist remains anonymous. You may recognize the bright red
and white swoosh on a Coke can or bottle, but can you name the artist who
created it?

Examples of Commercial Art

People have created commercial art for centuries. As soon as someone
developed a product, they probably thought about ways to get more people to
buy it. Here's an example of an advertising image for a beverage called Selecto:
Done in 1889 for an Algerian beverage company, it's in French but still easy to
understand. With its bright colors and placement of the bottle of Selecto in the
middle of the table, the image clearly suggests Selecto as the drink of choice.
Here's another example, an American travel poster from around 1937:
