WEEK 8
1. Explain how a genogram help a person to trace roots of the family and,
2. Create their own family genogram.
LESSON 8
TRACING FAMILY ROOTS: THE USE OF THE GENOGRAM
A genogram is a detailed realistic picture of a genealogical chart that shows how members in a family
of multiple generations are connected to each other. It uses special symbols to describe these
relationships. This graphic family map goes beyond a traditional family tree as it can be used to analyze
hereditary patterns and psychological factors that characterize relationships.
Renowned family therapist Monica McGoldrick and psychologist Randy Gerson conceptualized and
propagated genograms in clinical settings. To date, these graphical symbols are useful in medicine,
psychology, education, social work, and other related fields.

Genograms can be very useful as they comprise rich data on the families, including personal
circumstances and date of death of each individual. Other extra information include education, occupation,
and other professional affiliations. There are genograms that reveal data on problem behaviors and
ailments in the family.
Genograms can be very useful in determining modes of behavior in the ancestral lineage that can
explain the present behavior of young people. Adolescents usually appreciate the chance to share their
family background. Precautions should be applied, however, in instances where some family members do
not appreciate seeing a visual representation of relationships that are considered distant and conflictual. In
this case, the genogram should be used sensitively.

1. Decide the purpose for creating a genogram which is somehow similar to a family tree. Would it be for a
school project, use of a healthcare provider, planning a family reunion, and others? In designing a
genogram, you may need to be familiar with the names and relationships of the family members in your
genogram, their medical history, and emotional states, among others.
3. Determine the names of your relatives such as paternal and maternal grandparents, par- ents, aunts,
uncles, and their children.
4. Indicate if a relative is deceased, male or female, or if a couple is separated, depending on the purpose
of your genogram.
5. As you connect the relationships, appropriate symbols are utilized to indicate whether the relationships
are close, conflictual, or distant.
For gathering data about your relatives, texting, phone call interview, emails, social me- dia,
photograph documentation, and other forms of research may be utilized.
