7 In the previous lesson, we learned that "Voice" refers to the connection between the subject and

the object of a sentence, which is linked through a verb. It has two types the active and passive

voice. The active voice is so called because the subject of the sentence is the doer of an action

that affects the sentence's object. The passive voice, on the other hand, is when the object is acted

upon by the subject of the sentence.

8 In this lesson, you will be able to know and to explain one of the tenses of verb.

9 BIZ: MSC UP & UNDER

2 Verbs are words that describe an action or occurrence or indicate a state of being.

3 These are words that express action that is either physical (dance, eat, talk, etc.) or mental

(understand, hope, think, choose).

4 When verbs are used to refer to a state of being, linking verbs and helping verbs are used. The

most common linking verb is the verb to be in all its forms and the modals. Verbs have tense. Do

you have an idea what tense is? Very Good!

5 BIZ: MSC UP & UNDER

6 Tense is the time expressed by a verb.

7 Verbs may be categorized as either regular or irregular verbs. The simple past tense of verb

depends its type or category. Do you know what simple past tense is? Very Good!

8 BIZ: MSC UP & UNDER

9 The simple past is a verb tense that is used to talk about something that happened or existed

before now.

2 Do you know how to form the simple past tense of regular and irregular verbs? Excellent!

3 To form the regular verb: just simply add d or ed at the end of the action words. Examples of

action words that must be added “d” at the end to form their simple past tenses are dance-danced,

combine-combined, and love -loved while for “ed” are want-wanted, print-printed, and play

-played. Go to page 7 of your module for additional examples.

4 To form the irregular verb; make some changes in the spelling particularly the vowels or just

completely change the action word. Examples are go-went, shake-shook, and buy-bought. There

are other examples in the page 7 of your self-learning modules.

5 BIZ: MSC UP & UNDER

6 Time markers can help you evaluate if the action in the sentence in is in simple past tense. What

time markers are commonly for simple past tense? Awesome!

7 Words such as yesterday, last night, and a year ago are used with verbs in the simple past tense.
