THE GLOCAL TEACHER

1. Interview two (2) Filipino Teachers (1 teaching abroad, and 1 teaching in the Philippines). Record
the interview, if it is through chat then make a Narrative report on the interview conducted with
screenshots of your conversations as evidence. Guide questions for the interview are stated in the
attached video.

1.1. Teaching abroad

Name of the interviewer: Charlyn Bellezas

The name of the teacher that I interviewed is Joymee Adaro. She is 27 years old, and she has six
(6) years of teaching. She's now currently teaching at Thailand.

Ms. Joymee Adaro considered herself as a developing glocal teacher. According to her,
professionally 6 years in teaching is still not enough to become a proficient one, because developing
personal strength and character to carry out the role effectively as a teacher needs more time, years and
experiences.

She choose the learning environment as what she likes the most during her teaching, she said as
well that a happy learning environment creates a happy learners.

For the last given question, she responded that she has given the Local knowledge, values, culture,
21st century skills and international developments a much considerations in teaching. And that's
because according to her the student needs all of these. Teaching them the values and culture will give
them open doors for sharing and exploring the world that will help them to connect with others.
Teaching them local knowledge, international and the 21st century skills will help them to become more
globally prepared for the future.

1.2. Teaching in our country (Philippines)

Name of the interviewer: Jay Lure G. Baguio

When I heard about the ‘Glocal Teacher’, I found out that they are our teachers who thinks and
acts both locally and globally with worldwide perspectives but is teaching in the communities, localities,
towns, provinces, and regions where he is situated. Upon understanding what Glocal teacher means, I
thought of my teachers before, because I see them as someone who fits with it. However, there’s also
someone I know that has teaching experiences and attainment that blends with both local and global
perspectives. He is Mr. Cristito S. Suan Jr., Teacher 1 at Laak National High School (Laak, Davao de Oro).
He is 28 years old and has already 3 years in teaching.

Last October 2021, I messaged him through messenger and asked him if he can be interviewed
about his experiences and perceptions in teaching profession. Luckily, I got positive response from him.
So, I decided to gather information from him through Google form. However, due to internet
insufficiency in his location he suggested that we’ll conduct the interview via messenger. So I sent the
question in advance in order to answer it for his convenience and to give him time to rationalize his
thoughts.

The following are the response of Mr. Suan:

Q1. How do you consider yourself as a teacher?

Answer: Mr. Suan consider himself as a ‘Developing’ teacher.

Q2. How do you consider yourself as a teacher?

Answer: Mr. Suan consider himself as a ‘Global’ teacher.

Q3. When you are teaching, what do you like most?

Answer: When Mr. Suan is teaching, he like most ‘The learning environment’, as well as ‘The pay’.

Q4. Which of the following have you given much considerations in teaching? Why?

Answer: In Mr. Suan’s teaching, he given much considerations on the ‘Local knowledge, values, culture,
21st century skills, and international developments’. He further stated that, ‘Because, it is anchored from
the prescribed competencies set by the Department of Education especially in this digital era and it is
also aligned with the school vision, mission, and goals of every institution that a learner should uphold
after their scholastic endeavor.’

Reflection: Please be guided by the following questions in writing your reflection.

1. Who is a glocal teacher?

What are the attributes of the
glocal teacher?
A glocal teacher is the one who
think internationally, and must
possess a wider
range of knowledge and is
furnished with enough
skills, appropriate attitude
and
universal values to teach
learners at home or abroad but
is equipped with both time
tested
as well as modern technologies
in education in any time and
any place in the world. Thus,
a glocal teacher, teaches in the
local communities but someone
who thinks and acts both
locally and globally, meaning
he/she has to be open-minded
on world issues and events
that can be a benefit to his
locale. Aside from this, a glocal
teacher understand how this
world is interconnected, are
creative and innovative,
understand, respect and tolerant
of
the diversity of cultures because
no students are the same, all
students are unique and
have differences. As glocal
teachers, he/she must
accommodate the cultural
differences
and commonalities of his/her
students. They have to feel that
they can relate on their
different culture and one must
not be discriminated because of
being different. He/she
must have a connection
with the learners, and
always put in mind that
aside from
teaching the students on how to
be globally competent, he/she
must teaches the student
moral values and help develop
their characters.

1. Who is a glocal teacher? What are the attributes of the glocal teacher?

In my own specific term of glocal teacher, they are those teachers who had an ability and
potential to teach locally and globally, as well as the teachers who are willing to adopt other's culture.
But accordingly glocal teacher is someone who thinks and acts both locally and globally with worldwide
perspectives but is teaching in the communities, localities, towns, provinces and regions where he is
situated.

Here are some few attributes of the glocal teacher in general. They understand one’s own
cultural identity and its influence on personal dispositions and classroom practice. They used real-life
global examples, materials, and resources when considering local, national, and human issues, Valued
the input of culturally and linguistically diverse learners, families, and colleagues, and modeling cultural
sensitivity, Create as well environments that encourage positive cross-cultural interaction, Helped
learners find appropriate actions to improve local and global conditions and assessing them the global
education competence and providing growth opportunities based on their levels of development and
social responsibility.

2. Can the teacher who you have interviewed be classified as glocal teacher? Why? or why not?

Yes, the teachers that we had interviewed are classified as a glocal teacher, because they have
those accurate attributes of being a glocal teacher. Just like from Ms. Adaro's own perspective, she
responded that she has given the Local knowledge, values, culture, 21st century skills and international
developments a much considerations in teaching. And that’s because according to her the student
needs all of these. Teaching them the values and culture will give them open doors for sharing and
exploring the world that will help them to connect with others. Teaching them local knowledge,
international and the 21st century skills will help them to become more globally prepared for the future.
And according as well to Mr. Suan, those attributes of a glocal teacher is anchored from the prescribed
competencies set by the department of education especially in this digital era and it is also aligned with
the schools vision, mission and goals of every institution that a learner should uphold after their
scholastic endeavor.

From that perspective of Ms. Adaro and Mr. Suan, it added more evidence that she is
considered as a certified glocal teacher. The passion of teaching is not just within our own country but as
well as for the other countries around the world.

3. Can one be a global teacher, without teaching abroad? Write your insight.

One can be a global teacher without teaching abroad because being a global teacher doesn't
mean we have to teach from another country. It is not about where we teach, it is about what we teach
and how we teach our students. To become a global teacher, one should broaden his/her teaching
approaches and shouldn’t be afraid of engaging with other people and intensifying their experiences
beyond the confines of their classrooms, schools or communities. The broader the learning
environment, the higher the chance of attaining global competitiveness. As long as he/she
integrates various global issues into their curriculum including cultural diversity, economic,
environmental and social issues, he/she can be considered as a global teacher. Aside from this, in
today's era, the advancement of the technologies have been massive, that means global teaching is not
only applied in the classroom nor we have to go abroad to teach because the internet globalized
communication allowing us to communicate and teach from people around the world. Lastly, on
becoming a global teacher, the teacher shall expand the scope of their viewpoint beyond the normal
boundaries of the local classroom, which would help the students learns about diversity and how they
can fit into the global society

A global teacher is a knowledgeable and competent teacher who is possessed with enough skills,
proper attitude and universal values to teach students with both time tested as well as modern
technologies in education in any place in the world. He or she is someone who thinks and acts both
locally and globally with worldwide perspectives, right in the communities where he or she is situated.
Yes, but with the aid of technology, in my own opinion, He can be a global teacher without teaching
abroad in other countries.

4. Reflect on the statement: “As a glocal teacher, act locally but think globally.”

In the teaching-learning process, the teacher acts as a facilitator and a guidance to the students
especially in shaping the children the way they grow beyond the subject; in developing 21 st century
skills, values, personality and behavior. A glocal teacher is someone who acts locally but think globally,
which means that he/she must be appropriately and fully equipped with the essential skills, literate
about the newly innovative technologies and practice its technical terminologies. Also, conforming to
the universal values and have an extensive range of standpoints. He/she must have tolerance on world
issues and events. He/she must integrates various global issues into their educational
curriculum including cultural diversity, economic, environmental and social issues and how we can
come up with a better solution to surpass the particular issues because even though students are aware
of these issues, they might not think that the issues directly affect them. So in the teaching-learning
process, the teacher must contain real life examples that is relevant and timely occurring around the
world. The statement "As a glocal teacher, act locally but think globally" may mean that even if he/she
teaches in his locality where he/she is situated. As a teacher it is very important to apply global
perspective, to have a “world-class” teaching approach especially in maximizing the use of available
educational materials that a students can achieve the learning outcomes and standards.
Correspondingly, a glocal teacher means to see to it that we are not disregarding our own culture and
country. As we experience the continuous process of globalization, a teacher must stand to influence
the students to have a consistent appreciation and give importance to our beloved country.

As a future teachers, we have to blend both global and local perspective. As the saying goes:
“think globally, but act locally” or “think local but act global.”, we should have a variety of goals ranging
from increased knowledge about the people, events, and issues around the world to advance the
frontier of knowledge, to sustain the total development of quality education and build a humane
society.
