Checking negative diodes

- Connect the leads of a multimeter, used in

the diode test function, as shown in the fig-
ur"e,moving the negative lead onto the po-
sitions indicated by the arrows;

NOTE The readings for the three terminals

of the negative diodes must give re-
versepolarity values (current is not
passing).
P3WO11LO1

- reverse the positions of the multimeter

leads and carry out the test by moving the
positive lead in sequence onto the posi-
tions indicated by the arrows.

NOTE The readings for the three terminals

of the negative diodes must give di-
rect polarity values (current is pass-

M. MARELLI M70R -1,4/12 STARTER MO-

TOR WITH EPICYCLIC REDUCTION GEAR

This motor can deliver high power despite its

small weight. This advantage is obtained by
combining a small armature, which can reach
a very high speed of rotation, with an
epicyclic reduction gear capable of multiply-
ing the torque developed.

PJWO12LO1 Epicyclic reduction gear

The driving gear is on the end of the armature

and engages with three satellite gears,
mounted on three pins of the satellite gear
shaft, on the end of which is mounted the en-
gagement pinion for starting the engine. At
the same time, the satellite gears engage with
a stator gear, attached to the motor casing,
with inner splines. The stator's reaction caus-
es the satellite gear shaft to rotate around the
axis of the motor, at reduced speed in relation
to the armature.
The total revolutions transmitted by the latter
are transformed into revolutions of each
satellite on its own axis and revolutions of the
satellite shaft on the motor's axis.

BENCH OVERHAUL

Before overhaulingthe startermotor,

make sure that the reason for insuffi-
cient engagementtorque during start-
ing is not due to low battery charge
conditions.

1 Remove the two rods joining the front end

bracket to the rear end bracket, adding
two additional nuts (nut and locknut).

2. Undo the bolts (arrowed) and remove the

rear end bracket.

3. Release the retaining clips, withdraw the

two brushes and remove the brush carrier
plate.

4. Undo the nut securing the earth braid to

the electromagnet and remove the stator
casing with the windings and two brush-
es.
To replace the brushes only, they
should be broken with a hammer or
crushedin a vice, then the winding ter-
minals must be tin-soldered in the new
brushes.

CHECKS
Subject the starter motor components to the following tests:

armature: continuity, short circuit and earth insulation tests

stator: continuity and earth insulation tests
brush carrier mounting: earth insulation
elettromagnet: Continuity and earth insulation tests

Wheneverthe startermotor engagesnoisily during starter,the pinion-roller clutch must be re-

placed.

FAULT DIAGNOSIS OF THE OPERATING FAULTS OF THE STARTER MOTOR

1. The motor does not turn

The cause may be:

- battery terminals and/or clamps corroded;
- clamp and/or terminal of the starter motor supply cable loose;
- starter motor supply cable terminal broken or corroded;
- battery fully discharged;
- no contact on the commutator brushes;
- positive brush short-circuited;
- starter switch contacts corroded, worn or insulated by the interposition of debris;
- armature or stator earthed;
- armature or commutator centrifuged;
- pinion engagement electromagnet winding broken or earthed.

2. The motor turns very slowly

The cause may be:

- brushes and commutator blades worn;

- some of the coils of the stator or armature winding short circuited;
- battery terminals and clamps corroded;
- battery in very low state of charge, or one or more elements damaged

3. Excessive noise during starting

The cause may be:

- roller clutch mechanism worn;

- incorrect alignment between engine and flywheel;
- some flywheel teeth are excessively worn on the engagement side;
- speed reduction gear faulty or excessively worn.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPONENTS

Engine coolant temperature gauge

The engine coolant temperature gauge is op-

erated directly by the signal transmitted by a
sensor located on the engine to the side of
the thermostat.
The sensor is made up of a brass casing and
the resistive element comprises an NTC (Ne-
gative Temperature Coefficient) type ther-
mistor where the electrical resistance of the
sensor decreases as the temperature in-
creases.

Location of coolant temperature sensor

~ The sensor only provides temperature infor-

mation to the appropriate gauge.
The switching on/off of the radiator cooling
fan is taken care of by the electronic injec-
tion/ignition control unit.

Rev counter

This is an instrument operated by a signal

coming from the injection/ignition control
unit.
The danger speed outside of the revs (red
sector) is between 6750 & 9000 rpm.

Speedometer

The speedometer is electronic; the gauge and

its circuit receive a speed signal from the
speedometer pulse generator.
The generator, located on the differential, ex-
ploits the Hall effect and supplies and output
signal whose frequency is proportional to the
speed.
The output signal to the pulse g~nerator is
sent not only to the instrument panel, but al-
so the fuel injection-ignition control unit.

Removing - refitting engine oil minimum
pressure sensor

- Remove the first section of the exhaust

pipe (refer to the alternator removal - refit-
ting procedure);
- undo the bolts shown in the figure and
move the mounting bracket away from the
inlet manifold;

- disconnect the wiring connection from the

engine oil minimum pressure sensor and
remove the sensor.

Fuel gauge

The fuel gauge is driven directly from the rel-

evant sensor located in the fuel tank.
The sensor consists of a potentiometer
whose moving part is driven by a float which,
moving in accordance with the fuel level,
causes the resistance of the potentiometer to
change.
When the fuel falls below a particular level
(about 5Iitres), a contact is closed which en-
sures that the reserve warning light comes
on.

For the fuel gauge removal - refitting

operations, refer to Section 10 "Fuel
system ".
