I. Answer the following questions briefly and comprehensively.

1. What do you think are the major contributions of science and technology to the Philippine nation-
building?
The major contributions of science and technology to Philippine nation-building is the establishment of
research institutions such as the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). This is relevant to the
country's socioeconomic development and industrialization. All of the discoveries and advances
resulting to additional information and advancements in science. Our country's capacity to generate
local commodities for domestic needs, as well as worldwide scientific research publications, is currently
at an all-time low.

2. What specific government policy do you like the most in terms of contributing to the development of
science and technology in the Philippines?
It would be the Republic Act No. 2067 AN ACT TO PROMOTE SCIENTIFIC, ENGENEERING AND
TECHNOLPGICAL RESEARCH INVENTION AND DEVELOPMENT because this policy encourages our
scientist for innovation in technological advancement for the purpose of the public. Advancement in
technology would somehow solve some of the issues like insufficient electrical distribution in all region
and more.

3. What do you think are the major contributions of the Philippines to the field of S & T at the present?
The Filipinos have contributed a lot in the field of science and technology industry. There have been
inventions by Filipino scientists in the past. Lamps using sea water instead of kerosene and Cooking
stove using methane gas from farm animals waste. A group of Filipino students recently created robotic
toy automobiles. Another group of Filipinos was also successful in developing dengue testing kits. Their
innovations may not be spectacular, but they can make a difference in science and technology not just in
the Philippines, but throughout the world.

4. What policies do you want the government to implement in the near future?
We can't predict what our future will bring, nonetheless, I believe that the government should allow
everyone no age limit, with or without experience to work in any company. There should be equality so
that it will lessen the discrimination in our society and lessen the number of crimes for everyone will be
able to get a job. It will help us to live in peaceful. The way of life of many people will be balance.

II. Identify some achievements in the field of S & T related to industry, education, and government under
the administration of the following Philippine presidents:

1. Pres. Corazon Aquino

President Corazon Aquino encouraged scientists and inventors to restore the Philippines to its previous
status as second only to Japan in science and technology during her presidency. One of her
administration's aims was to reach the status of an industrialized country by the year 2000.
Corazon Aquino was the most prominent figure of the 1986 People Power Revolution, which ended the
20-year rule of President Ferdinand Marcos. She was named Time magazine's Woman of the Year in
1986. Prior to this, she had not held any elective office.

2. Pres. Fidel Ramos

 In 1993, Science and Technology Agenda for National Development (STAND) was established.

 Magna Carta for Science and Technology Personnel (Republic Act No. 8439)

 Science and Technology Scholarship Law of 1994 (Republic Act No. 7687)

 Inventors and Inventions Incentives Act (Republic Act No. 7459)

3. Press. Joseph Estrada

In President Joseph Estrada’s term, two major legislations that he signed were Philippine Clean Air Act of
1999 (Republic Act No. 8749) which was designed to protect and preserve the environment and ensure
the sustainable development of its natural resources, and Electronic Commerce Act of 2000 (Republic
Act No. 8792) which outlaws computer hacking and provides opportunities for new businesses emerging
from the Internet-driven New Economy. President Estrada launched a full-scale program based on cost-
effective irrigation technologies. He also announced that Dole-outs are out, which meant basic health
care, basic nutrition, and useful education for those who want, but cannot afford it. Lastly, he said that
they would speed up the program to establish one science high school in every province.

4. Pres. Gloria Arroyo

In the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo administration, the science and technology sector of the Philippines was
dubbed as the “golden age” of science and technology by then secretary Estrella Albastro . Numerous
laws and projects that concerns both the environment and science to push technology as a tool to
increase the country’s economic level. This is to help increase the productivity from Science, Technology
and Innovations (STI) and help benefit the poor people. Moreover, the term “Filipinnovation” was the
coined term used in helping the Philippines to be an innovation hub in Asia. One of the more known
laws to be passed by her administration was the R.A. 9367 or the “Biofuels” act. This act promotes the
development and usage of biofuels throughout the country.

5. Pres. Benigno Aquino III

 Pres. Benigno Aquino III upgrades the government health facilities.


 Systematic deployment of health professionals to far-flung areas.
 Numerous policies to improve financial protection in health purpose.
 Phil Health was provided for the poorest Filipino household with full coverage of expenses for
selected disease.
 K to 12 Basic Education Program

6. Pres. Rodrigo Duterte

 Republic Act No. 11035, also known as an “Act Institutionalizing the Balik Scientist Program,”
would give more incentives to returning Filipino experts, scientists, inventors, and engineers
who would share their expertise in the country.
 REPUBLIC ACT No. 11363
An Act Establishing the Philippine Space Development and Utilization Policy and Creating The
Philippine Space Agency, and for Other Purposes
 Memorandum of agreement between Russia & the Philippines regarding space program will
soon materialize.
 Agreement to standardize voice call charges to P2.50.
 On weather, 271 new weather stations were installed by the DOST throughout the country.
