Chemical Formula
● Compounds are substances made of two or more different
elements chemically combined in a set ratio.
● A chemical bond, or electric force, holds the atoms together in a
compound.
● The properties of a compound are totally different from the
elements that make up the compound.
● Chemical Formulas are used to show the ratio of elements in a
compound. The elements present in a compound are identifies with
the element’s symbol. If more than one atom of an element is in the compound, it is shown with
a subscript. (O2, O3, H2, N2, etc.)
● Sometimes, substances contain more than one molecule of an individual compound. This is shown
with a coefficient. Coefficients are written in front of the compound’s formula. (4H2, 2SO3)
