CONDITIONALS
Module in English 9
First Quarter
1
What I Need to Know
Have you tried asking someone for a favor and received the response: ''On
one condition''? We are used to getting conditions before people do us a favor, which
is lucky for us because there are also conditions in our grammar. Conditionals form
an important part of English language. When we want to talk about a possible or not
possible situation and its consequences, we use conditionals. We also use
conditionals to communicate about the past and uncertainties. Bear in mind though
that there is always a condition.
Is there anything else you should know about conditionals? Yes, you still have
a lot to learn. This module will let you know the different types of conditionals and
how to organize conditionals in sentences.
While working through this module you will be able to use conditionals in expressing
arguments.
2
What I Know
Here you will find an activity that checks what you already know about
conditional sentence structures. If you get a perfect score, you will skip this module.
But if you miss the perfect score, you will proceed with the activities in this module to
help you better understand conditionals.
Activity
Fill in the correct form of the verb. Write the letter of your choice on the space
provided before the number.
_____1. If I had had enough money, I _____ that laptop for my online classes.
A. bought B. would buy C. would have bought D. had bought
_____3. She would go to the Abra Provincial Capitol if she _____ a job. There is a
job fair schedule and the SPES.
A. had wanted B. will want C. wanted D. wants
_____5. It _____ easy to paint pictures of the places to visit in Abra if you knew how
to paint.

_____8. If it _____ I would stay at home and make a quick and easy lunch.
A. rains B. rained C. has rained D. had rained
_____9. You will catch the last jeep to Bangued if you _____ earlier.
A. left B. leaves C. leave D. would leave
The previous lessons in Grade 8 helped you understand the different tenses
of verbs in journalistic writing. To refresh your memory, verb tense tells you when
the action happens. English has three simple tenses: present, past, and future.
Present tense tells you what is going on right now. Past tense tells you what
happened before the present time. Future tense talks about what has not happened
yet.
Complete the following activity to reengage you with the information that you
have already learned.
Activity
Identify the tense of the underlined verb in each sentence. Write PAST, PRESENT
and FUTURE on the space provided before the number.
4
What’s New?
I am certain that you fared well in the review. Now that you have a fresh look
on the tenses of verbs, let’s begin our new lesson.
First, you are going to read the lyrics of the song Count on Me by Bruno Mars.
If you know the tune, you may also sing while you read. The song is part of the
Songs for the Philippines album which was compiled to help the victims of Super
Typhoon Yolanda.
Reflect on the message and focus on the underlined phrases. Then, answer
the questions that follow.
Count on Me
by: Bruno Mars
If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea,
I'll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see,
I'll be the light to guide you
Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need
You can count on me like one two three
I'll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like four three two
You'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Whoa, whoa
Oh, oh
Yeah, yeah
If you tossin' and you're turnin' and you just can't fall asleep
I'll sing a song
Beside you
And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me
Everyday I will
Remind you
Ooh
Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need
You can count on me like one two three
I'll…
5
Do you have any friend you can count on? Do you consider yourself as a
good friend? What qualities do you consider as most important in good friends?
For numbers 6-9, match the beginnings of the sentences to the correct endings.
For number 10, take a closer look at the “if clauses” and the “main clauses” in
numbers 6-9. How are they formed?
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
The clauses in the song Count on Me by Bruno Mars are formed by using the first
conditional sentence structure. Use the first conditional to talk about situations that
have a realistic chance of happening in the future. You will learn more about
conditional sentence structures in the succeeding section.
By the way, the word when (meaning “every time”) is an alternative to the word, if.
6
What’s In It?
Conditionals are a little difficult to master but they are extremely useful to
learn. But with some basic knowledge and a lot of practice, you will soon be able to
use conditionals as if you were a native English speaker. Find out more about
conditionals by studying the correct structure in the sample sentences below.
CONDITIONALS are structures in English that establish what will happen if a certain
event takes place or if a certain action is performed. There are four types of
commonly used conditionals in the English language that are differentiated on the
basis of the degree of possibility implied by each of them.
The FIRST CONDITIONAL is used to talk about future events that might happen. It
uses the present tense to discuss the possible future events.
Structure: if + present simple, ... will + base form
Examples
If it rains later, we will stay at home.
If I go abroad, I will get something back for you.
This THIRD CONDITIONAL talks about the past. These conditions, too, are
therefore impossible, because they have either already occurred or might have
occurred but won’t anymore.
Structure:
Examples
If I had studied a little more in elementary, English would have been easier.
I could have asked him about the last lesson on modals if he had shown up.
7
What’s More?
Activity 1
Read the sentences and identify the type of conditionals used. Write ZERO,
FIRST, SECOND and THIRD on the space provide before the number.
8
Assessment 1
Fill in the gaps with your own ideas to make true sentences about your normal
reaction in the situations given. If any of the sentences below are about things that
you never do or experience, do not miss out those sentences .
9
Activity 2
Rewrite the following sentences using conditional sentences.
Example: I didn’t plan for the party because we weren’t allowed to hold parties
under ECQ.
If we were allowed to hold parties under ECQ, I would plan for the party.
1. I didn’t buy a new mobile phone because I didn’t have enough money.

You are now nearing the end of this module. Certainly, you are excited to put
your knowledge on conditionals into action.

do in unusual situations? Using conditional sentence structures, predict what your
friends would do. For example, if my bestfriend won a million pesos, she would give
it all to charity. Write at least 10 sentences with conditionals. Use the rubric
indicated below as your guide.

Additional Activities
Well done! You are nearly finished with this module. For sure, you’re in the
wings, waiting to learn new topics on grammar. But for the last time, let’s try these
activities and explore more about the applications of conditional sentence structures
in real-life. Refer to the rubric below and use extra sheets for your responses.
Do know what a bucket list is? It’s a list of activities a person wants to do before they
die. Imagine that you only have one week left to live. How would you spend that
time? Write a paragraph using the second conditional structure telling what you
would do with the seven days you have remaining.
