Problem 1:

A device’s switching waveforms (vDS and iD) are shown in Figure 1. Find its turn-on switching power loss
(PS-on), turn-off switching power loss (PS-off), on-state power loss (Pon), off-state power loss (Poff), and total
power loss (Ploss,), assuming Vdc = 300 V, IL = 10 A, Von = 2 V, Ioff = 0.5 mA, ton-d = 0.1 s, ti-r = 0.1 s, tv-f = 0.1
s, toff-d = 0.2 s, tv-r = 0.2 s, ti-f = 0.2 s, Ton =5 s, and switching frequency, fsw = 100 kHz.

Problem 2: A dc/dc converter is shown in Figure 2, where the switching function (or switching pattern) is
shown as well.

1. Use switching function, S, to express the inductor voltage V L1 as a function of S, VC and Vin, the
switch voltage (voltage across the switch) VS as a function of S, VC , Vin and Vout, and the switch
current IS as a function of S, iL1 and iL2.
2. Assuming that the input/output/capacitor voltages, Vin, Vout, and VC, and inductor currents, IL1
and IL2, all are constant, draw waveforms of the switch voltage VS and diode current ID.
3. Use duty cycle, D, (D = Ton/T) to derive and express the relationship between Vout and Vin,
assuming that Vin, Vout, and VC are constant, inductor currents, iL1 and iL2 are continuous.

Problem 3: A dc/dc converter (Bulk converter) is shown in Figure 3, where the switching function (or
switching pattern) is shown as well.

1. Use switching function, S, to derive the duty ratio of the buck converter.
2. Derive the equations of the inductor and output capacitor.
3. Assume the input voltage, output voltage, and output power are Vin=70V, Vout=50V, and
Pout=300W, respectively. Determine the duty ratio, the input and output currents, the value of
the current with 30% current ripple, and the value of the output capacitor with 10% voltage
ripple.
4. Apply point (3) on MATLAB Simulink to determine the inputs and outputs characteristic
waveforms.
