1. A transformer has 800 primary turns and 2000 secondary turns. If the
primary voltage is 160 V, determine the secondary voltage assuming an
ideal transformer.

2. An ideal transformer has a turns ratio of 15:1 and is supplied at 180 V

when the primary current is 4 A. Calculate the secondary voltage and
current.

3. A 500 V/100 V, single-phase transformer takes a full load primary

current of 4 A. Neglecting losses, determine (a) the full load secondary
current, and (b) the rating of the transformer.

4. A transformer takes a current of 1 A when its primary is connected to a 300

V, 50 Hz supply, the secondary being on open-circuit. If the power absorbed
is 120 watts, calculate (a) the iron loss current, (b) the power factor on no-
load, and (c) the magnetizing current.

5. A single-phase, 50 Hz transformer has 40 primary turns and 520 secondary

turns. The cross- sectional area of the core is 270 cm2. When the primary
winding is connected to a 300-volt supply, determine (a) the maximum value
of flux density in the core, and (b) the voltage induced in the secondary
winding.

6. A transformer has 1200 primary turns and 200 secondary turns. The
primary and secondary resistances are 0.2 ꭥ and 0.02 ꭥ respectively and
the corresponding leakage reactances are 1.2 ꭥ and 0.05 ꭥ respectively.
Calculate (a) the equivalent resistance, reactance and impedance referred
to the primary winding, and (b) the phase angle of the impedance.

7. A transformer has an open circuit voltage of 110 volts. A tap-changing

device operates when the regulation falls below 3%. Calculate the load
voltage at which the tap-changer operates.

8. A single-phase transformer has 2400 turns on the primary and 600 turns on
the secondary. Its no- load current is 4 A at a power factor of 0.25 lagging.
Assuming the volt drop in the windings is negligible, calculate the primary
current and power factor when the secondary current is 80 A at a power
factor of 0.8 lagging.

9. A 200-MVA, 210-kV/21-KV, three-phase Y-∆ transformer has an equivalent

series impedance of 6 + j3 Ω per phase referred to the high-voltage side. The
transformer is supplying a three-phase load of 200-MVA, 0.8 power factor
lagging at a terminal voltage of 21 kV (line to line) on its low-voltage side.
The primary is supplied from a feeder with an impedance of 3 + j6 Ω per
phase. Determine:
a. the line-to-line voltage at the high-voltage terminals of the transformer
and
b. the sending-end of the feeder.

10. A 320-V:2100-V transformer has a series leakage reactance of 81.6 Ω as

referred to the high-voltage side. A load connected to the low-voltage side is
observed to be absorbing 21.5 kW, unity power factor, and the voltage is
measured to be 520 V. Calculate the corresponding voltage and power factor
as measured at the high-voltage terminals.

11. A 150 kVA, 6300 - 420 V 50 Hz single phase transformer has the following
parameters all given in ohms:
RLS = 0.00800 RHS = 1.96 RfeHS = 62.6
XLS = 0.00557 XHS = 4.55 XMHS = 9300
This transformer is operated in the step-down mode and delivers 73.5% of its
rated power to a load that has a power factor of 0.64 lagging.
Find:
1. draw the equivalent circuit model of the transformer with the equivalent
series Z's referred to the high voltage side .
2. Find:
a) the total Zin of the transformer at the high side
b) input Z of the transformer with the load disconnected
c) input voltage at 75% load required to maintain rated load voltage
d) exciting current with the load disconnected

12. The resistances and leakage reactances of a 51-kVA, 50-Hz, 2100-V:210-

V distribution transformer are

R1 = 0.43 Ω, R2 = 0.0043 Ω, Xl1 = 9.3 Ω, Xl2 = 0.093 Ω

where subscript 1 denotes the 2100-V winding and subscript 2 denotes the 210-
V winding. Each quantity is referred to its own side of the transformer.
a. Draw the equivalent circuit referred to:
(i) the high- and
(ii) the low-voltage sides. Label the impedances numerically.
b. Consider the transformer to deliver its rated kVA to a load on the low-
voltage side with 200 V across the load. Find:
(i) Find the high-side terminal voltage for a load power factor of 0.85
lagging.
(ii) Find the high-side terminal voltage for a load power factor of 0.85
leading.
