BACKGROUND OF THE MODULE

The THC 1 – Philippine Tourism, Geography and Culture was designed based on the
course content required by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) with emphasis on the
History and Geographic Location of the country, Tourist Spots, Regional Festivals, Diverse
Culture and Traditions of the Filipino People as well as Gastronomy. This module aims to
enable you to understand and appreciate the role of tourism and its importance as the fifth
growth driver in the Philippine economy.

OBJECTIVES OF THE MODULE

This module was developed to provide you clear insights on the importance of
Philippine tourism and its significant contribution to the society and economy, also to foster
knowledge, skills, and ability to become globally competitive.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

The author of this module would like to extent its gratitude to the Western Mindanao
State University for giving this opportunity to develop an Instructional Material which will
serve as curriculum guide of the program intended for the students of the Bachelor of Science
in Hospitality Management (BSHM) under the College of Home Economics.

Introduction

This subject is anchored on the Vision and Mission of Western Mindanao State
University as well as Goal of the College of Home Economics and Objectives of the
Hospitality Management Department. The University is tagged as the University of Choice
for higher learning in the region that produces globally competitive graduates imbued with
industry driven lifelong learning skills as reflected in its VMGO statements.

Objectives

At the end of this lesson, you can:

1. Internalize the Vision, and Mission as well the Goals and Objectives of the

Vision

The College of Home Economics is the lead provider of competent, holistic and world class
quality human resources imbued with industry driven lifelong learning skills in the areas of
Home Economics, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Hospitality Management.

Hospitality Management Department’s Objectives


1. To prepare, develop and produce students with knowledge and skills in management,
marketing sales entrepreneurship and other business related activities for students to
be globally competitive.
2. To equip the students with culinary skills and to develop interest, creativity,
innovation, and awareness to food safety and hygiene measures and contribute to
consumer’s health.

3. To orient and provide practical training on hospitality industry, travel and tourism
industry, food and beverage service industry and sports, gaming and entertainment
industry.
4. To inculcate corporate values and business ethics in the campus and workplace. To
promote leadership, sense of urgency, and commitment and integrity.
5. To initiate/ develop/ utilize hospitality, travel and tourism based research projects.
