Tutorial Problem:
In the rear wheel suspension of the Volkswagen Beetle, the spring motion is provided by the torsion
bar (AISI-1018 CD Steel) fastened to an arm on which the wheel is mounted. The torque in the
torsion bar is created by the 2500 N force acting on the wheel from the ground through a 300 mm
lever arm. Due to space limitations, the bearing holding the torsion bar is situated 100 mm from the
wheel shaft. The diameter of the torsion bar is 28 mm. Find the different stress components and the
principal stresses at the critical point, which occurs at the bearing. (fig-1). Find the factor of safety
according the Maximum Shear Stress criterion.

Assignment Problem:

The 32 mm (at “A”) shaft of an overhead crank subjected to a force P of 1kN is shown in fig-2.
The shaft is made of AISI-1020 HR steel. If the point “A” is assumed to be the critical point in the
critical cross-section, determine the different stress components at A. Find the principal stresses.
Find the factor of safety as per the Maximum Shear Stress criterion. All dimensions are in mm.

Tutorial Solution

The ground reaction load is acting at the centre of the wheel perpendicular to the page, let it be F. The F
induces a torque, T, and a bending moment, M, at the critical point, which is in the cross-section of the
torsion bar at the bearing. The shear stress due to transverse shear force V=F is zero at the critical point
where the bending stress and torsional shear stress are maximum.

T = F*300 = 2500*300 = 750000 N-mm.

xz = T*r/J = 750000*(28/2)/(*28^4/32) = 174 MPa.

M = F*100 = 2500*100 = 250000 N-mm.

xx = M*c/I = 250000*(28/2)/(*28^4/64) = 116 MPa.

The unordered principal stresses:

A, B = (116/2)sqrt((116/2)^2+174^2)

A = 241.4 MPa.

B = -125.4 MPa.

C = 0.

Ordered principal stresses:

1 = A = 241.4 MPa

2 = C = 0

3 = B = -125.4 MPa

For AISI-1018 CD Steel, the yield strength is: Syt = 370 MPa.

Maximum Shear Stress (MSS) criterion:

max = (1-3)/2 = Syt/2

(1-3) = Syt/n, where n = factor of safety

n = Syt/(1-3) = 370/(241.4+125.4) = 1.0087.
