Introduction
In the country Philippines, grass is one of the most plants that you can see
around the environment. Grass has been part of Filipinos since it is found everywhere.
One of the commonly found grasses is the carabao grass (Paspalum Conjugatum).
Carabao grass has a special property that can help to control the growth of bacteria.
Since many people nowadays don’t care if they’re clean or not, specially their hands.
There is a very serious problem that everyone should know and take action. By just
simply not washing your hands you can get many diseases that is dangerous to our
health. The common victim of the said problem are the children, they just touch anything
not knowing they got many bacteria. We want to address this problem by making a
hand sanitizer out from carabao grass as the ingredient.
This study uses organic materials and can be found everywhere to eliminate the
germs and bacteria that have been transferred to the skin. Past studies shows that
carabao grass is good in treating wounds and sores. So, what property does carabao
grass have to help the individual in preventing diseases? If it does, could it really be
effective?
Carabao grass is very abundant in our locality. There wouldn’t be much of a hard
time in looking for it, since there are many colony of carabao grass we can find in our
surroundings.
Chapter 2
Grass is found in abundance in open waste places and settled areas about
towns, along trails, streams throughout the Philippines. Carabao grass is vigorous,
creeping perennial with long stolon’s rooting at pods. Its leaf-sheath is strongly
compressed (Malones, M.L. 2014).
Aloe Vera on the other hand, is a plant that belongs to Liliacasefamily that grows
easily in hot and arid region. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties that prevent
against creation of dandruff on head. The Aloe Vera is also helpful for control of fungal
infections such Alopedia disease. On other effects which have been ascribed to Aloe
Vera fresh gel, one can imply its healing effects in wounds and skin super facial
traumas. A study by (Daburksr et. Al) showed that use of Aloe Vera gel ethanoic extract
attenuated the diabetic foot wound. Another article revealed that Aloe Vera could be a
treatment of choice foe burn injuries.
Its great impact to our lives serves a s a tool for a grower and healthier
environment. Always make your body clean to avoid diseases; it is a crucial part of
being a responsible person (Salaskar et.al, 2011). (Berti, 2007) innovation is the word.
Creating a more effective at killing microorganisms and better tolerated than soap and
water (Blaybock and Huang, 2000) can solve the hygienic and sanitary problems.
Chapter 3
Methodology
This chapter includes the materials and method, procedure, testing of product
and how to test the product.
Carabao grass (400g), 20 mL of water, boiling pot, aloe vera(100 g), stirring rod,
alcohol (ethanol 500 mL ), spray bottle, small glass, essential oil, and strainer.
Procedure
In order the oil and juice of carabao grass, the researchers decided to use steaming
process.
1. Gather and wash in order to clean the material that is needed in our product.
2. Remove the leaves from the stems of the grass and cut the leaves into
smaller pieces.
3. Boil some water in the boiling pot (20 mL), put some carabao grass inside the
small glass and add some ethanol.
4. Place the small glass inside the boiling pot with the boiling water inside in
order to heat and get the extract. Leave it for 60 seconds.
5. While steaming the small glass in the boiling pot, the researchers will prepare
the aloe vera and gather its juices.
6. Remove the small glass after 1 minute and filter it using the strainer in order
to separate the leaves and the extract.
7. After filtering, mix all the liquid ingredients, the carabao grass extract and aloe
vera juice and mix it thoroughly. The researchers add some essential oil to
add some scents and aroma on it.
8. Finally, stir it again and put it in the spray bottle.
Chapter 4
The Carabao grass hand sanitizer is an effective hand sanitizer, it can kill germs
at the same time moisturize the skin. The table shows that the Commercial hand
sanitizer is way better than our product. However, were planning to improve our
product.
Between the Carabao grass hand sanitizer and Commercial hand sanitizer, our
result show that their difference in effectivity is not too far from each other.
Chapter 5
Conclusion
Based on the result/discussion, the researchers found out that the Carabao grass
can be used as main ingredient in making hand sanitizer together with aloe vera.
Carabao grass has an antibacterial property. According to Bellinger (1914), Crabao
grass had the potential in controlling the growth and reproduction of bacteria. The use of
Carabao grass to make a hand sanitizer is an effective as the commercial hand
sanitizers. Since, Carabao grass is known for treating wound and sores (Greenfield,
2004).
The Carabao grass: an organic hand sanitizer is already proven to kill germs and
bacteria. It is a good substitute to commercial hand sanitizer because it is cheaper and
not harmful to the environment. Aside from killing germs and bacteria it also moisturizes
the hand of the user. This product is not perfect but it can be improved more. Overall
this hand sanitizer is good and useful especially to the people who can’t afford that
expensive hand sanitizer.
Recommendation
For further study, the researchers would like to recommend studies about how
can Carabao grass and aloe vera moisturized our skin, why is that aloe vera is less
viscous when not steamed, and the exact measurement of aloe vera to produce a
viscous outcome. Why that Carabao grass is has a strong odor and the amount of
extract to have a better scent.
For the change of the product, it is highly required to steam the aloe vera juice to
make it more viscous. The amount of the Carabao grass should be bigger to make the
product more effective. Then the volume of the ethyl alcohol should be lessening to
prevent strong unwanted odor. It is also required to add more amount of essential oil for
it to smells good.
