SECTION A –READING SKILLS (5)

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
1) In olden times, heaven was ruled by a group of powerful gods called the Titans.
Jupiter defeated them in a war and became the king of gods. Prometheus was the son
of one of the Titan gods. Prometheus was brave and selfless. He always thought about
the future and worked towards making it better.

2) Unlike other gods who stayed on the mountain top, far away from people,
Prometheus chose to live among the people and help them. He felt sad whenever he
found people suffering in agony. He found them living in caves and holes in the
ground. He saw how helpless people were when they shivered with cold because there
was no fire. He thought that they could keep themselves warm and cook their food if
they had the fire.

3) Prometheus pleaded with Jupiter to give fire to the people so that they would have a
little comfort through the cold months of winter. Jupiter refused his request because he
believed that if men had fire, they might become strong just like the gods. Prometheus
decided to help the people on his own. He went to the Sun, took sparks of fire from it
and hid it beneath the Earth. He called a few shivering men from their caves, built a
fire for them and taught them how to warm themselves. Soon, people were warm and
happy. They thanked Prometheus for the wonderful gift he brought for them from the
Sun. He also showed them how to build houses out of wood and stone, tame sheep and
cattle and make them useful, and how to plough, sow and reap. He taught them the art
of making tools with metal. When he saw how happy the world was becoming, he
cried out, “The Golden Age has arrived!”
