COURSE CODE : CEW 431

COURSE : FLUIDS AND HYDRAULICS LABORATORY
LEVEL OF OPENNESS : 2
CATEGORY : PARTIALLY OPEN
DEGREE OF OPEN ENDED (%) : 66%
PERIOD ACTIVITY : 3 WEEKS
EXPERIMENT NAME : 2.2 : DETERMINATION OF METACENTRIC HEIGHT

Procedure

1. Weight the transverse adjustable weight, g and jockey weight, g.

2. Weight and assemble the pontoon, also measure the pontoon dimensions in
term of length (L), width (b) and height (h).
3. Position jockey weight along the mast such that the center of gravity occurs at
the top of the pontoon.
4. Locate the pontoon center of gravity, y by balancing the mast of pontoon on a
knife edge and ensuring that the adjustable weight is in its central position.
5. Place the pontoon in the water and measure the depth of immerse, di 1, di 2, di3
and di 4 and calculate the average.
6. Make sure plump bob read at “0” tilt angle. If not, adjust the line accordingly.
7. Move the adjustable weight to the right in 2cm from the center, then record a
reading of angle of tilt by using trigonometric method. After that move
adjustable weight with different value, x (4cm, 6cm.......). Repeat this step for
left side with different value, x (2cm, 4cm, 6cm.....)
8. Record the data and calculate the metacentric height by using formula.
