Pre-Test

Fill in the blanks with the correct or appropriate answer. Use your notebook as
your answer sheet.

1. Human behavior is rooted in the ___________, fundamental and always-

changing needs, wants and desires.
2. There are no trends without _________ as the word itself implies movement.
3. Innovations don’t necessarily mean ____________.
4. Without _________, there is no opportunity or ground to launch a trend.

Learning Activities

Trends may refer to the aging population of Japan, the rise of China or the
popularity of Kdrama. It can also mean a new technology, a surge of demand for
a new beauty product or a new belief or religion. Whatever trend you may be
thinking about right now, remember that the fundamental elements that drive
all kinds of trends will always apply.

There are 3 fundamental elements in a trend; basic needs, drivers of

change and innovations.

• Basic needs refer to the things that are necessary to sustain life.
According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, basic needs are
physiological and safety needs which includes food, water, warmth,
rest, security and safety. Our behavior is rooted in these basic,
fundamental and always-changing needs, wants and desires.
According to Psychology it is innate in a man to need more, want
more and desire more.

• Drivers of Change is an internal or external pressure that shapes

change. There are no trends without change as the word itself
implies movement. In every industry or field, there are people who
are considered drivers of change. Business-savvy professionals
bring change to their business organizations, political leaders
implement change in the government, artists develop their crafts,
and the list goes on.

However, not only people can be called drivers of change.

There are triggers that create immediate changes that drive the
emergence of a trend. These can include technological advancement,
political events, economic crises, environmental concerns,
pandemics and more.

2
• Innovations are start-ups, new products, services, experience and
campaigns that are resolving points of customer tension, and
creating new levels of customer expectation. They don’t necessarily
mean trends. But without innovations, there is no opportunity or
ground to launch a trend. It involves the development of a new
product out of the old one. Coca cola since 1886 has been producing
soda that we all know includes sugar and calories that are not
beneficial to health. People bought and drank it and even became a
trend for soda products. In the 80’s, people became weight and
health conscious and watched their sugar and calorie intake. This
became another trend. In 1986, Diet Coke was introduced in the
market, in 2005 Coke Zero was the newest Coca Cola product.

Study the diagram below. Note that the elements are interconnected with
each other. How will you explain the link? Let us find out as we continue to dig
deeper in understanding the elements of a trend.

Innova- Drivers
tions of
Change

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic shook all the foundations that
were painstakingly built through the years. Financial security gave most of the
people the sense of protection because it meant that basic needs and even wants
and desires can always be provided because there is wealth. In this situation,
the world is witnessing a trend brought about by a driver of change – the COVID-
19 pandemic.

3
Thousands of years ago, people knew and practiced cleanliness and
hygiene to prevent illness, but now we are in the strictest sense of maintaining
proper hygiene and observance of health protocols implemented to prevent the
spread of the virus. Noticeably, our grocery lists or online shopping carts consist
of alcohols, facemasks and now even face shields. This became an emerging
trend in the market. Demands for these products spike until now and business-
minded people took these opportunities by supplying the demand. Innovators
saw an opportunity to develop products and systems to help us cope with the
“new normal”. Touch-free hand sanitizers in all forms and shapes came about,
fashionable face masks designs are available for the “fashionistas” even new
designs of public transportation vehicles are made to adhere to the health
protocols implemented. Take note that in this situation all the elements
fundamental in a trend are present; basic needs, drivers of change and
innovations.
