Questions

Bu Mawar is an English teacher of the VII grade students at a Junior High School in Surabaya. She has
been teaching at the school for six years by now and notices that her students’ achievement in learning
English is not always encouraging. Some of them are high achievers, while some are low achievers, She
understands that this also happens in other subjects, such as Mathematics. That is why she wants to
know whether there is a correlation between the students’ achievement in learning English and that of
Mathematics. Please help Bu Mawar to design the proposal for her research.
1. Write the outline of the background of the study so that readers will convince the importance of
conducting such a study.
2. Based on the background of the study, write down the research questions.
3. Formulate the hypothesis based on theories and/or previous research findings.
4. Give her suggestions what instruments to use, how to develop them (the instruments) so that she will
get the appropriate data, how to collect the appropriate data for the research, and how to analyze the
data to answer the research questions.

1. High achiever students are well-known by their great academic capability. These students not just
good in their academic life, but also have outstanding ability in mastering each subject, such as
English and Mathematic. Most common problem for Indonesian student is a lack of interest for this
subject. This study is conducted in order to investigate the motivation of achiever students of the
VII grade students at a Junior High School in Surabaya in learning and to know how students
maintain their motivation in learning English and Mathematic.

2. - How to get high achiever students’ motivation in learning English and Mathematics?

- Is there any correlation between English and Mathematic subject?

3. Learning process motivation is a crucial thing which it must be laid in every student mind. Without
sufficient motivation, even individual with the most remarkable abilities cannot accomplish long-
term goals. One of the most overlooked groups of students within a school often times can be the
high achiever and low achiever. High achiever typically is considered to students known by their
great academic capability for each subject. For these students, skills come easily, and they can
complete their work without assistance and often before others in the classroom are finished. In
addition, sometimes the level of skills being covered in the class can seem mundane to these
brilliant minds. However, what motivates students may not work for another, as no two students are
alike. Moreover, each student needs a variety of problem-solving skills. This is why personalized
learning is so important within the classroom. Many strategies can be implemented by the teacher
and school to ensure that students do not lose motivation and are provided with different instruction
to meet their needs.

4. The population of this investigation was VII students of Junior High School in Surabaya. The
sample was two classes, the total of the sample 60 students taken by using purposive sampling
method. The data was collected through students’ report. The data was analyzed by using Pearson
Product Moment correlation coefficient. Based on the data analysis, the value of correlation between
English and Mathematics achievement (r-obtained= 0.605) was higher than r-table (0.211) which
were significant at 0.005 level (2-tailed). It means that there was positive correlation between
English and Mathematics achievement. Since the value of r-obtained was higher than r-table, the
hypotheses was accepted. It could be concluded that there was significant correlation between
English and Mathematics achievement of the VII Grade Students of Junior High School in
Surabaya.
