II. THEORIES AND OBJECTIVES

A. Translation (English-Vietnamese & Vietnamese-


English)

- Consolidate students knowledge of grammatical structures;

- Help students build capacity of word accuracy and word choice


in business context;

- Help students obtain a native-style acquisition of text processing


and analysis in business context concerning business contracts,
memorandum of understanding, and other forms of texts.

B. Interpretation (English-Vietnamese & Vietnamese-


English)
- Equip students with sense of getting the main idea from a long
speech;

- Build students with capacity of interpret ting by summarizing a


long text and/or speech at conferences or negotiations or
interviews.;

- Help students with ability of achieving sense of prediction as an


interpreter at conferences or negotiation or interviews.;

- Strengthen students competence of interpret ting prepared and


impromptu speeches.

II. Materials for courses


A. Translation

- A variety of up-to-date business contracts, both in Vietnamese


and English, under application from domestic and foreign
companies;

- A wide range of Memorandum and understanding and other


business documents selected from companies and institutions;

- Selected business articles from well-known magazines, global


trade reports, and business research reports.;

B. Interpretation

- A wide selection of reported interviews by foreign and local


dignities, economists, researchers, scholars.;

- A wide selection of negotiation-styled talks and discussions;

- A wide provision of formal business speeches at conferences.


III. SUMMARY OF CONTENT

A. BUSINESS TRANSLATION (45 periods)

1. WEEK 1+2+3 (Dealing with Vietnamese Articles)

1. Vietnamese Text Processing Skills

- How to structure Vietnamese text coherently;

- How to analyze Vietnamese context;

- How to select word (word choice) to make it compatible with the


conveyance of context so as to have meaningful translation when
translated into English.

2. Actual Translation

- Students apply what they have already studied to translate into


English.

- Instructor provides guidance and correction.

2. WEEK 4+5+6 (Dealing with English Articles)

1. English Text Processing Skills

- How to process English text;


- How to structure English context logically so as to have
meaningful translation when translated into Vietnamese;

- How to deal with words, terms, idioms and structures so as to


have a smooth and clear translation.

2. Actual Translation

- Students will translate authentic advanced English articles


written by economists, experts, scholars, and researchers.

- Under instructors guidance, students will study how to analyze to


achieve coherrent translation.

3. WEEK 7+8+9 (Dealing With Translating Vietnamese Business Contracts)

1. Vietnamese Business Contracts Processing Skills

- How to analyze and structure sentence by sentence, item by item,


and part by part of a contract to avoid ambiguity so as to achieve
a translation in a coherrent manner.

- How to deal with words, terms, and structures so that students


are able to practise word accuracy and word choice.

2. Actual Translation

- Students will translate authentic Vietnamese business contracts


samples into English, which are currently modelled by domestic
or foreign companies.
- Instructor analyzes students translation and corrects their
translation mistakes.

4. WEEK 10+11+12 (Dealing With Translating English Business Contracts)

1. English Business Contracts Processing Skills

(Skills for processing English business contracts are treated in the same manner as those
for processing Vietnamese business contracts.)

2. Actual Translation

- Students will translate authentic Vietnamese business contracts


samples into English, which are currently modelled by domestic
or foreign companies.

- Instructor analyzes students translation and corrects their


translation mistakes.

5. WEEK 13+14+15 (Dealing With Translating Business-Related Legal Documents)

1. Vietnamese Legal Documents Processing Skills

Needless to say, legal documents are of crucial importance as they provide guildlines,
policies, and leadership for all businesses activating in the territory of Vietnam.
Therefore, the translation of legal documents requires the translator the complete degree
of acurracy and authenticity. This means that the original version and the translated
version are of the same meaning; no ambiguity or vagueness is allowed. In light of these,

- Students are armed with strong sense of word accuracy and word
choice relating to legal terms in business context.

- Strong ability to structure the text when translating into English.


2. Actual Translation

- Students will practise by translating legal documents such as


investment license, regulations, and other forms of business-
related legal papers.
