• Last year, in June, I was on holiday when my sister phoned me because

About the Speaking test

The Speaking test lasts about ‘ID to 12 minutes. You take the test with another candidate. There
are two examiners in the room. One examiner talks to you and the other examiner listens to you.

The Marinewater website shows their whole
range of watersports from sailing to the
exciting experience of controlling a boat on
a fast-moving river. The route is used by
professional athletes in training, so it is lit
until late, while the Centres restaurant serves

Marston Centre
The Morston Centre offers courses at all
levels for learning to monoge every kind
of boot you con think of. Fees for privore

I begun riding motorbikes when I wos eighteen yeors old, os o possenger on the bock
of my friend Luke's bike. It wos o clossic motorbike - big, fost, ond noisy! Our first few
rides were short trips — which he wos very coreful to moke os enjoyoble os possible
for me — ond os o result I fell in love with the whole motorbike experience olmost

After o couple of months of shorter rides, we went on o longer group ride with Luke's
motorcycling club, which he soid would give me o good ideo of the plecisures ond
difficulties of motorcycling. We rode opproximotely 100 km in one doy, ond it wos o

Some people in the group finolly rnonoged to get it going, but in the end Tonio hod to

wouldn't be oble to stort her bike ogoin. She brovely decided she could ride book home
olone, but I doubted whether I‘d hove such o confident cittitude in the some situotion.

Our group then drove on to the mountoins ond stopped for some lunch — ond thot‘s
where things storted to go wrong. The weother turned bod ond it begon to snow. Then,
without osking onyone, the leoder of the group hod the ideo of going in o completely
new direction up o steep mountoin rood, with corners thot would be difficult for
motorbikes even when the weother wos good — ond by now it wos snowing quite heovily!

When we finolly mode it to the top of the mountoin, Luke wos onnoyed. He soid it wos
too risky to be on o mountoin in such bod weother, ond thot we should go bock down.
We were both frozen when we reoched the bottom, despite our cold-weother clothes.
However, when we got bock to my house we both begon to see the funnier side of it
oll, ond I immediotely osked Luke when we could go ogoin. I reolised I could handle the
worst of times on a motorbike, and there and then I made up my mind to try and save up
for one.

American Black Ducks

I work at a US university where my team and I are f
trying to learn more about water birds, particularly one I
called the American black duck. And we‘ve just started
using an exciting piece of equipment called a ‘night-
vision scope’, which allows us to see the ducks in the I
dark!
We’re worried about black ducks mainly because
their numbers have fallen hugely and we don't know
whether there’s enough food on the east coast for
these animals. There's lots of information about their
daytime activities, but nothing about what they do at
night, because we simply haven’t had the equipment.
But this new ‘scope’ will produce really clear pictures,
even on moonless nights, so we‘ll be able to find out
more and make better decisions about looking after the
area where they live based on what we learn. l
It is very hard work. There are four of us, each working six hours daily. We've studied
ducks in different locations, and l’ve had to take a boat to some sites and make notes
on every duck I see. The weather hasn’t helped — some nights are mild, but more often
it’s wet. Oh, and it’s so quiet l‘ve needed lots of coffee to stop me falling asleep! We’ve
only missed one working day so far, because the snow was too deep even for our
special snow vehicles.
Still I like the challenge of it, especially compared to what the summer will bring — hours
in a laboratory, where we'll look at our results together. lt’ll be hard to be stuck inside -
but it’s essential to do this. And I wouldn’t change it tor anything!

About the Speaking test

The Speaking test lasts about 10 to 12 minutes. You take the test with another candidate. There
are two examiners in the room. One examiner talks to you and the other examiner listens to you.
Both the examiners give you marks.

Part 1
The examiners introduce themselves and then one examiner asks you and your partner to say
your names and spell them. This examiner then asks you questions about yourself, your daily
life, interests, etc.

Part 2
The examiner asks you to talk about something together and gives you a drawing to help you.

Part 3
You each have a chance to talk by yourselves. The examiner gives you a colour photograph to
look at and asks you to talk about it. When you have finished talking, the examiner gives your
partner a different photograph to look at and to talk about.

Part 4
The examiner asks you and your partner to say more about the subject of the photographs in
Part 3. You may be asked to give your opinion or to talk about something that has happened
to you.
