RESULTS DISCUSSION
The design calculation results of both simulation software (Sw2) and manually (Kern Arnold’s
Method) are as follow:

Parameters Sw2 Kern Arnold’s Method

Diameter 1460 mm (54 inch) 914.4 mm (36 inch)

Height 4380 mm (14.4 ft) 3785.6 mm (12.42 ft)

L/D 3 4.14

The above table shows that there is a relatively small error between Kern Arnold’s Method and
Sw2. So, we concluded that the manual method proves to be more accurate and reliable. The
reason we cannot depend on the software is because of the following reasons:

 At present, the problem taken has insufficient data like terminal velocity, nozzle size, etc.
 Not enough knowledge and unskilled to use Sw2 software.
 The basis of the Kern method is that it uses drag coefficient and Re which is used to find
length and diameter while the method which software use is unknown.
 To optimize in software, we need surge time and holdup time which is not used in the
calculation of Kern’s method.
 The software also includes the calculation of mist eliminator while in the book there is no
such formula for calculation of mist eliminator.

RESULTS DISCUSSION
The design calculation results of both simulation software (Sw2) and manually (Kern Arnold’s

Parameters Sw2 Kern Arnold’s Method

Diameter 101384 mm (399 inch) 914.4 mm (36 inch)

L/D 3.71 3

The above table shows that there is a huge difference between Kern Arnold’s Method and Sw2.
So, according to results the design of two phase vertical separator is not practical for this data.
However two phase vertical separator is much feasible to design for this data as done in previous
question. As vertical separators are commonly used in flow streams with low to intermediate gas-
liquid ratios.

RESULTS DISCUSSION
The design calculation results of both simulation software (Sw2) and manually (Kern Arnold’s
Method) are as follow:

Parameters Sw2 Kern Arnold’s Method

Diameter 3119 mm (112.8 inch) 1981 mm (78 inch)

Height 9356 mm (30.7 ft) 6431 mm (21.1 ft)

L/D 3 3..09
