NOTE: This lesson plan is good for a one-session class. It is assumed that the students have mastery on
verb tenses and types of verbals.
I. OBJECTIVE
After the discussion and exercises, the learners are expected to write a short poem in
parallel structures with 90% proficiency.
III. PROCEDURE
A. Motivation
Play the music video of the song entitled “To Be a Princess / To Be a Popstar.”
Tell the class to pay attention to the lyrics of the song (see Appendix). Afterwards, ask
them to share to the class the noticeable features of the lyrics. Do so until the learners point
out the parallel form of the words in the song. This activity should be done in fifteen (10)
minutes.
Below is a table of the presumed thoughts of the students.

B. Presentation
Discuss the meaning of parallelism. The discussion should be done in fifteen (20)
minutes. Do the following:
STEP 1 Draw 3 parallel lines on the board.
STEP 2 Explain that parallel structure means that the same grammatical form is used
for similar ideas.
STEP 3 Write the word swimming at the end of the first parallel line.
STEP 4 Discuss the structure of the word and the –ing ending.
STEP 5 Ask the class what word could go on the next line using the same
grammatical form.
STEP 6 Write the words students share.
STEP 7 Make a coherent sentence using these words.

C. Practice Exercises
On an index card, have the students write three action verbs in present tense. The
students will exchange their cards with a partner. Each of them will write one parallel
sentence using all three verbs. Do the same process, except that the verbs are now in past
tense, in future tense, in gerundial form, and lastly in infinitive form. This activity should
be done in fifteen (15) minutes.
D. Generalization
Explain why it’s important to correct faulty parallelism.
E. Evaluation
Group the students into four. Each group is tasked to deliver a one-stanza free verse
poem about climate change. The poem should contain parallel structures. They are given
fifteen (15) minutes to do the task.
