Figure 1-1: Oil and Gas Manifold

1.1 Introduction
The oil produced by the separator can be directed through an oil manifold to the
gauge tank, surge tank, production flow line or burner depending on the test
circumstances. It can also direct the flow to either the port or starboard burner
without stopping the well test because of undesirable wind directions.

The gas manifold directs the gas produced from the separator to the port or
starboard flare ports according to the wind direction.

1.2 Features and Benefits

The oil manifold presents the following features:

Oil and Gas Manifolds / Overview

• Five ball valves allowing the oil flow to be diverted in various directions.
• Five wing union connections to connect it to other pieces of equipment.

From the temporary storage tank, the flow is piped to the oil manifold by way of a
transfer pump. The pump boosts the pressure so that the flow can be supplied
to a burner or re-injected into a flow line. For offshore tests, two burners are
typically used to support continuous testing. The oil manifold can direct the flow
to either the port or starboard burner without stopping the well test because of
undesirable wind directions.

The gas manifold presents the following features:

• Two ball valves to divert the gas flow to either one flare or the other.
• Three wing union connections to connect the separator to the gas flare lines.

The gas manifold directs the gas produced from the separator to the port or
starboard flare ports according to the wind direction . The gas manifold can also
act as a low pressure diverter on various lines downstream of the separator.

1.3 Applications
In a well testing setup, the oil manifold is necessary to connect the separator, the
tank, the transfer pump, and the burners.

The gas manifold is required when using two flare ports. Depending on the
complexity of the equipment setup, more than one gas manifold may be
necessary.

Figure 2-1: Oil and Gas Manifold

2.1 Introduction

Figure 2-2: Surface Test Equipment

The "Surface Test Equipment" figure shows where the oil and gas manifolds
are typically located in relationship to the other surface testing equipment. The
purpose of these manifolds is to divert the flow of oil and gas from the separator
to of the downstream equipment.

The gas manifold directs the gas produced from the separator gas outlet to the
port or starboard flare ports according to the wind direction.

The inlet of the oil manifold is connected to the oil outlet of the separator. The
oil produced by the separator can be directed through the oil manifold to the
gauge tank, surge tank, production flow line or burner depending on the test
circumstances.

From the temporary storage tank, the flow is piped to the oil manifold by way of a
transfer pump. The pump boosts the pressure so that the flow can be supplied to
a burner or re-injected into a flow line.

The oil manifold can also direct the flow to either the port or starboard burner
without stopping the well test because of undesirable wind directions.

2.2 Objectives
Upon completion of this package, you should be able to:
ELC Testing\P. Quéré\InTouch content ID #4245968\1.0\Release Date:12-Jun-2007\EDMS UID: 1649509300\Produced: 25-Jun-2007 08:42:20

• Explain the purpose of the oil and gas manifolds.

• Draw the oil manifold connections between the separator, tank, transfer
pump, and burners.
• Draw the gas manifold connections to the burners.

Upon completion of the Compass Tasksheets for the oil and gas manifolds,
you should be able to:

• Remove the ball valve from an oil or gas manifold and disassemble it.
• Verify the condition of the sealing surfaces on the ball valve.
• Reassemble the ball valve and install it on the manifold.
• Review FIT and TRIM (see Glossary) procedures for oil and gas manifolds
as described in the relevant maintenance manuals, and review the InTouch
Manifold reference page.

2.3 Principle of Operation

2.3.1 Oil Manifold

The oil manifold shown in the Oil Manifold Flow Paths diagram is composed
of an arrangement of piping, five ball valves (see Glossary), and wing union
connections (see Glossary). This arrangement makes it possible to divert the
oil without interrupting the flow. The classical flow paths that the oil from the
separator can take are described in the following paragraphs.

Figure 2-3: Oil Manifold Flow Paths

• When the oil is sent from the separator to the left burner, valves V2 and V3
are open; and valves V1, V4, and V5 are closed.
• When the oil is sent from the separator to the right burner, valves V2 and V5
are open; and valves V1, V3, and V4 are closed.
• When the oil from the separator is sent to the tank, valve V1 is open; and
valves V2, V3, V4, and V5 are closed.
• When it is necessary to empty the tank and send the oil to one of the burners,
the position of the valves differs depending on whether a single or double
compartment tank is used.

– If a double compartment tank is used, one compartment can be filled

while the other is emptied. The valve settings are:

* Valves V1 and V4 are open, and either V3 or V5 is open.

* Valve V2 is closed, and either V3 or V5 is closed.

– If a single compartment tank is used, the tank is emptied when the well
is shut in. The valve settings are:

* Valve V4 is open, and either V3 or V5 is open.

* Valves V1 and V2 are closed, and either V3 or V5 is closed.

Note
When one outlet of the oil manifold is not used, it is usually sealed with a plug.

2.3.2 Gas Manifold

The gas manifold in the "Gas Manifold Flow Paths" drawing shows how the gas
manifold is connected to the separator gas line and to the burner flare lines.
The gas manifold is made up of two ball valves that permit the gas leaving the
separator to be diverted to either one flare or the other, depending on the wind
direction.
ELC Testing\P. Quéré\InTouch content ID #4245968\1.0\Release Date:12-Jun-2007\EDMS UID: 1649509300\Produced: 25-Jun-2007 08:42:20

Figure 2-4: Manifold Flow Paths

The gas manifold can also act as a low pressure diverter on various lines
downstream of the separator. Depending on the complexity of the equipment
setup, more than one gas manifold may be necessary.

2.4 Equipment
The oil manifold is available in different sizes: 2 in., 3 in. and 4 in. Similarly the
gas manifold comes in standard sizes of 3 in., 4 in. and 6 in.

The wide range of manifolds makes it possible to select the right type and
quantity required to accommodate the well test needs, while not being larger,
more complicated, or expensive than the overall project requirements.

The following datasheet shows the most common types of manifold available
and their respective specifications. For additional information, please refer to
InTouchSupport.com.

2.5 Safety

• All valves should be labeled to indicate flow paths (e.g., from separator to
starboard burner) to avoid diverting the flow to the wrong direction.
• When diverting the flow, always open one valve before closing another. This
practice prevents flow interruption and pressure buildup upstream of the
valves.
• Use the handles provided with the manifolds to open and close the ball
valves.
• To avoid damaging the ball valve, when opening or closing these valves
do not use cheaters.

2.6 Maintenance
For information about manifold preparation and functional checks, see the
recommended steps in the Field Operating Handbook (FOH) for Surface Well
Testing. For information about equipment maintenance, refer to the relevant
maintenance manual and to the Field Operating Handbook (FOH) for Surface
Well Testing.

For this type of equipment, it is quite common to implement some modifications

issued by the product center (modification recaps-MR). Some MR can be
mandatory and are listed under the Technical Alerts in InTouchSupport.com.

Up to date information are available under the InTouch Manifold Reference Page.

2.7 Summary
In this training page, we have discussed:

• The function (see Introduction) of the oil and gas manifolds.

• The relationship between the flow paths of the oil and the position of the
valves (see Principle of Operation).
• Key safety points for the oil and gas manifolds (see Safety ).
