Write about the following topic:

Some people like to eat their meals in restaurants, while others like to prepare their own meals
at home.
Compare and contrast these two possible choices of eating and say which one you prefer.

Write at least 200 words.

Model Answer

A number of individuals prefer to get the food they eat from restaurants, whereas other
people find home-cooked food to be preferable. In this essay, I will compare and contrast
these different ways of eating, and then I will say which method I believe is better.

First, let us examine why restaurants are chosen as the source of food by some. Perhaps
the main reason is due to the fact that no preparation is required. We only have to walk
into the restaurant, sit down and order the meal. In a very short time the food is before
us on a plate, and after we have enjoyed the meal there is no washing up. In contrast, when
we cook at home, plates and pans must be washed and this can take time. Another
difference between food prepared at home and that purchased in restaurants is variety.
Although both restaurant food and home-cooked meals provide us with the energy we need
to survive, the professional chefs in restaurants can produce food which is more
interesting than the average person can cook.

Now, let us turn to preparing meals at home. Despite the fact that home- cooked food and
restaurant food may contain the same ingredients, such as meat or fish and so on, when we
prepare food at home, we can be sure that these are fresh and free from harmful germs
that may cause illness. On the other hand, however, when we eat in restaurants there is
always the danger that the food is neither fresh nor healthy. Another difference, of
course, between eating out and in our own dining room is cost. Food we prepare ourselves is
certainly much cheaper.

Having examined some of the similarities and differences between eating at home and in
restaurants, I would say that definitely, because I am student with limited money, I
prefer to eat at home.
