Personal Achievement Reflection

Description
For my personal Achievement I have decided to share about the time I learned how to volleyball jump
serve in volleyball. It took a lot of practice and patience to become effective. It took me about a month
of watching videos, studying other players, and practicing in the volleyball sand pits.

Skill Development
A couple of skills I learned from trying to practice and use this serve. Is that a lot of power starts from
your legs and footwork. If you don’t have the proper footwork and approach you can’t time the serve
right to be effective. So some skills I had to practice were timing, footwork, and volleyball approach and
jumping techniques. I had to time my approach while throwing the ball in the air, I had to time it so
when the ball is coming down from the throw, that’s the optical time I should be hitting the ball. But
even before that I have to step up my stride and prepare my jump a few seconds before it comes down
a little.

Self Awareness
I was aware that if I wanted to use the move effectively I would have to practice the serve on the
regular. Back in Grade 11 when I didn’t have work I would usually go to the sand pit volleyball court by
the LEC and practice. This experience deepened my understanding that if I work hard at something I
could achieve it. Other thing I was aware of is that in order to be able to serve effectively you would
have to get in shape and actually strengthen your core in order to hit and the ball and balance in game.
Failure was also a struggle I faced but practice makes perfect.

Future Connections
Through Volleyball and Basketball. I found that doing sports is a good way to build relationships and
make new friendships along the way. Sports is a great gateway to make future connections. And having
a healthy lifestyle is also ideal in living a good life. A healthy lifestyle won’t just help you physically but
also mentally. Some connections I had were with friends that also helped me fall in love with sports.
Having a good support system is a necessity I feel in order to have a good and healthy life.
Personal Relevancy
Sports made me realize that competition could be a driving force to help become even better at what
you want to do. The whole reason why I really wanted to learn this serve is so that my friends were
surprised when I use the move, I would have a competitive edge on them and thus this would amuse
them. As well another thing that I found important from this is that doing upper body stuff also relies on
your footwork and how balance is important. All things start from your feet moving your body.
