Skill-building Activities, part 1


You have had several practices in writing claims and evidences. Another term for “claim”
is “thesis statement”. A claim or thesis statement tells your audience what you are going
to talk about, and it also guides you to focus your ideas. Below is an activity for writing
claims/thesis statements. Read the examples and come up with your claim/thesis
statement for the following items.
Example:
Topic: Teleseryes
Claim: Teleseryes are addicting
Evidences:
1. Actors are attractive.
2. Storylines are fast-paced and exciting.
Takes away time from studying. (change! Ex. Problems in the story are very relatable.)
A. Topic : Sports
Claim: Athletes need support
Evidences:
1. Some athletes struggle with their academics
2. Some athletes have anger management issues
3. Some athletes don’t have enough funds to get the right gear
B. Topic: Vinegar
Claim: Vinegar is one of the most useful household items to have.
1. Vinegar can remove unpleasant odors from a room.
2. Vinegar can kill bathroom germs.
3. Vinegar can save a garment from stain.
C. Topic: Parents
Claim: There are many ways to show your parents love.
1. Spending time with your parents
2. Doing chores without being asked.
3. Obeying parent’s requests without arguing.
D. Topic: Philippines
Claim: There are many beautiful places in the Philippines.
1. Palawan
2. Batanes
3. Vigan
E. Topic: Health
Claim: The youth face serious health risks.
1. Drug abuse
2. Teen pregnancy
3. Bullying

Now, practice writing evidences! You are given 3 items to work on. You can do it!
A. Topic: Studies and Love life
Claim: Studies and love life are two different priorities.
1. Study for yourself and love is to be served.
2. Love is not just a game it’s a life choice first study and then
you can have love.
3. You need to decide which to spend your money on – getting
more resources for learning or spending money on dates
and gifts.
B. Topic: Social Media
Claim: Social Media influences the beliefs and view of a person.
1. The public is “meant” to believe everything they’re told and
not question it.
2. Some get depressed if their posts do not get “likes”.
3. The media can shape our attitudes about a multitude of
things from what we buy, the people we admire.
C. Topic: Dreams
Claim: Dreams can’t be controlled.
1. Dreams encompass goals and more.
2. They give your life purpose, direction, and meaning.
3. They shape your life choices, help you build toward the future,
and give you a sense of control and hope.

Shade the hand that describes the start of your journey to essay writing. Write a
sentence or two about your learning or clarification on this module.

In writing essay, it is hard for me to do it properly. But, it increases


my understanding and helps me the process of learning because it
pushes me, among other things, to clarify and sort out ideas and
information, to analyze source materials and to exercise critical
judgement.
