• Learning Task 1.3 – NASA Lost a Spacecraft

- Why did NASA lost a spacecraft? Why do you think their experts had done such mistakes?
- What daily life experiences involve the concepts discussed in this module (physical
quantities and measurements)? Do you have any experience making mistakes with these
concepts? How can we avoid such mistakes?
Answer:
- NASA's spacecraft was lost because engineers forgot to convert crucial data from
English to metric measurement before launching the craft. In their calculations, the
navigation team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) used the metric system of
millimeters and meters, whereas Lockheed Martin Astronautics in Denver, Colorado,
which developed and built the spacecraft, used the English system of inches, feet, and
pounds. JPL engineers did not take into consideration that the units had been
converted, the acceleration readings measured in English units of pound-seconds^2 for
a metric measure of force called newton-seconds^2. The spaceship was, in a way, lost in
translation.
- It is not a typical day-to-day experience, but instead an old one. I remember that
before I am a type student who’s getting low grades, that time I don’t really focus on
my studies or I don’t make it as my priority because all I think is doing things like
playing games, focusing on worthless things, and before I see education as not very
important because I am seeing people that become successful in life even though they
didn’t attend college or get a degree. But now as I grow older I understand what
education for is really, it is the integral development of a person. It is also a source of its
obvious advantages for a brighter and better life. Education has the potential to
improve society as a whole. It helps to create a society where individuals are aware of
their rights and responsibilities. We should always need to be aware in what we are
doing so that mistakes can never happen.
