CONJUNCTION
Conjunctions connect words, phrases, clauses , and sentences together. The conjunctions so,
therefore, so that, and because are used to describe cause and effect.

I finish my homework early so/so that I can watch TV afterward
Amelie has studied really therefore she deserves her high grades
Hard this semester

Effect Conjunction Cause

I caught a cold because I was out in the rain yesterday

Meanwhile, the conjunctions but although are used to describe two conditions that are
opposed to each other.

Activity 1
Listen to the following dialogue.
Dina : Have you heard about the collapsed bridge in Banten?
Roni: Not yet. What happened?
Dina: The bridge was old. Therefore, it broke when people were crossing it. Everybody fell into
the river.
Roni: How terrible! Were there any victims?
Dina: Yes. Most of the victims were elementary students.
Roni: Oh my God!
Dina: Luckily nobody was killed.
Roni: Thank God.
Dina: It’s because all of them could swim very well.

Activity 2
Listen to the rest dialogue
Dina: But a few victims were badly injured.
Roni: Oh, I’m really sorry. What happened to them?
Dina: They broke an arm or a leg.
Roni: How did it happen?
Dina: I guess the wooden planks of the bridge struck them really hard.
Roni: Oh dear.
