PILE QUALITY CONTROL TEST BY AXIAL STATIC LOAD


COMPRESSION METHOD
1. TEST PURPOSES & REQUIREMENTS
1. Foundation of the project is designed in the solution of reinforced concrete pile
foundation and executed by the method of piles
2. Static load compression test on reinforced concrete piles is to determine actual bearing
capacity of the pile, which is used to evaluate the long-term working ability to work of
the pile and is the basis for piles arrangement plan recombination design calculations in
the most effective way for the project.
3. For 450mm diameter pre-stressed spun pile option, maximum testing load for
preliminary static maintained load test is following designed documents.
2. METHOD & QUANTITY OF THE TEST
1. The piles used for the project is experimented by the method of: axial static load
compression.
2. The experiment carried out by the code British standard BS 8004:1986
3. Method of testing: A method of maintaining an axial static testing load on head of the
tested pile in each test level.

3.1. Static load test pile conducted using methods of loading previous counterweight
3.2. Testing system
3.2.1. Counterweight system
Counterweight system used in the works is a system comprised of many blocks of pre-
cast reinforced concrete weighing from 2.5 to 5 tons per block that are put together into
huge blocks on a steel beam system. Counterweight system is calculated to match the
testing load (the maximum test load multiplied with 1.2).
Beams system withstanding testing load: a system includes I-shaped steel beams linked
together on bearings system. Beams system is calculated for enough strength and no
deformation when loading as well as during the experiment.
Bearings system: The system includes pre-cast reinforced concrete slabs on the ground
and has effect of supporting beams system. Bearings system must be calculated to
ensure enough cross- section to not be causes of settlement when loading testing loads, not
affect the work of the pile as well as other devices in the course of the experiment.
3.2.2. Loading system
Loading system in the experiment is the hydraulic jack system with a lifting capacity of
50 tons (498.2kN is >1.5 times of the maximum requirement value) and has the
valid certification. This hydraulic jack system is mounted on the tested pile so that
compression jack axis coincides with the axis of the experimented pile. The jack head has
a self-regulation unit that always ensures compression force is transmitted along the pile
shaft.
Force measurement system:
Using hydraulic meters 0 - 400kG/cm2 measuring range. The meters has been tested and
licensed for use by the authority company. Compression force acting on the pile head is
calculated through readings of the meters and hydraulic lift coefficient of the hydraulic
jack.
Hydraulic oil pump system: hydraulic oil pump system is attached to the hydraulic jack
and oil is supplied into the jack in order to adjust the lifting capacity of the jack as desired.
Pumping discharge: 3 litters/minute, maximum pressure: 700 kg/cm2.
3.2.3. Deformation gauge system
Strain measurement system includes 04 settlement meters/gauges with measurement
range 0-50 mm, accuracy of 0.01mm tied up with pile shaft through a fitment system
and steel yokes. The meter has been tested and licensed for use by authority company.
Fitment system of settlement gauges: has magnetic legs by electric magnets fastened to
the steel bondage system mounted on the pile head.
Benchmark system: The benchmark system used in the works is a shape-steel system
with feet buried by concrete. The stiffness of the benchmark system must ensure to not
be distorted during the experiment and not be influenced by external forces.
4. TEST PROCEDURE
1. Static load compression test for reinforced concrete piles used in the project is
conducted in accordance with British standard BS 8004:1986.

3. Loading method
Check the operation of experimental devices and create good contact between the
device and the pile head: before the experiment, the settlement gauges is adjusted to 0,
previous loading is done by acting 5% of the design load on the pile head, holding this
load for 10 minutes and then unload it to 0 without correcting settlement gauges to 0,
the existing values of the meter are recorded as the initial readings corresponding to
when the load is 0 ton.
Loading testing load:
- Testing load is loaded by 2 experimental cycles for preliminary test pile;
- Testing load is loaded by 1 experimental cycles for working test pile;
(a) Preliminary test pile
Loading the pile must be carried out by each level without pulses, pile test by 2 test
cycles:
- Cycle I: load levels respectively increased by 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%,
60%,70%, 80%, 90%, 100% of the design load. Each load level must be
maintained and monitored in 10 minutes, but the load level of 100% design load,
must be observed within 60 min (1 hour) or settlement rate less than 0.25mm/h
(whichever is longer). Then load levels are reduced by 70%, 50%, 25%, 0% of
the design load when unloading, observation time for each load level is 10
minutes, except the load level of 0% design load is observed in 30 minutes.
-Cycle II: the level of load in turn increases: 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%,
110%,120%, 130%, 140%, 150%, 160%, 170%, 180%, 190% and 200% of the
design load and are maintained, monitored in 10 minutes. However the load level
of 200% design load is maintained in minimum 60 min and until reaching a
conventional stable settlement (whichever is longer). Then reducing testing load,
the reduced load is conducted in the order of 150%, 100%, 50%, 0% of the
design load. Each load level is monitored for 10 minutes, except the load level
of 0% design load is observed in 30 minutes.

NOTE:
1. Settlement of the pile head must be recorded immediately before loading.
2. The following load levels are only issued when further settlement of the pile head at
the previous load level not exceeding 0.25 mm in 1 hour, but the longest duration for each
load level must be less than 2 hours for load levels beyond 100% and 200 %.
3. Fixed time intervals for monitoring, reading and recording data for load levels 100%
and 200%:
- No more than 10 minutes per reading for the first 30 minutes.
- No more than 15 minutes per reading for the next 30 minutes.
- No more than 1h per reading for the next 10 h.

- No more than 2h per reading for the last 12 hours.


4. Pile head displacement speed reaches a conventional stable value: not exceed 0.25
mm/h
Conventional stable settlement: The settlement of the pile is called as conventional
stable when:
- Settlement speed of the pile must not exceed 0.25 mm/1h.
The difference of the meter (settlement gauges) must not exceed:
- 50% when the settlement is less than 1 mm
- 30% when the settlement is from 1 - 5 mm
- 20% when the settlement is greater than 5 mm
Tested pile is considered to be damaged when:
- Pile material is ruined in the testing process
- The experiment is considered finished when:
+ Achieve purposes of the experiment under the plan
+ The tested pile is ruined (including pile material damaged or ground
destroyed).
- The experiment must be paused if found:
+ Benchmarks are put in wrong places, not stable or damaged
+ The jack or measurement devices do not work or work incorrectly. The
experiment can be continued after treatment to overcome.
- The experiment must be terminated if found:
+ Pile compressed before loading.
- The above conditions can not overcome.
5. TECHNICAL MEASURES OF THE TEST
5.1. Test preparation
This task includes sequential steps to better service for experimental works. The
preparation steps include:
a) Checking and reinforcing the head of the tested pile: performed in accordance
to specification stated in standard BS 8004:1986.
b) When checking at site, the tested piles must have been satisfactory to conduct
the experiment and have been reinforced at pile surface as required by the design:
Check inclination of the pile compared to allowance by standard for
experimental piles, all the experimental piles must have been satisfactory for
inclination error (allowance error is within ± 1% of the pile length).
c) Inspection of experimental devices system:
Experimental equipment system when taking to the project must be closely
examined before being put into use. The hydraulic jack must be checked for
lifting capacity, the meters must be tested for sensitivity.
Counterweight system must be checked to ensure the total load exceeds
minimum 1.2 times of the expected maximum testing load.

Check the safety of the fitment system and bearings system.


d) Loading serving the experiment:
- The counterweight system serving for the experiment is loaded by tire-crane
having lifting capacity from 16 to 25 tons.
- The installation of the bearings system must be prescribed by regulations to
ensure no interruption to the work of the pile during experiment process, to
benchmarks system and other devices (closest distance of the bearing system to
the pile heart line must be not less than three times the largest edge of the pile.
- The benchmarks system support shall places not less than 2m from the center of test
pile.
- After installation of the bearings system is complete, carrying out loading the
beams system. The beams system must be checked to make sure well connection
inside the system before loading counterweights.
- Loading counterweight system: when loading concrete counterweights onto the
steel fitment system, concrete blocks are linked together (as a brick-up style)
into a solid block to ensure for a safe test.
- Installation of load transmission system (fake pile) on top/head of the tested pile
must ensure to be coaxial with the axis of the pile.
- After finishing installation of the counterweight system, technical staff in charge of
the experiment must check the stability of the entire system for the last time before
conducting the experiment.
5.2. Conducting the experiment
The experiment is just allowed to conduct after completing the above steps.
a) After the pile head is already ready for the test then must notify the investor, the
consultancy and supervision of the project to check eligibility for conducting the
experiment before transferring to the next step of construction.
b) After the works in the article 1.c mentioned above done, construction staffs shall
notify the investor, design consultancy unit and supervisory consultancy unit to be
conducting the experiment.
c) The experiment is conducted following the process described above.
d) The test should be conducted continuously until its end. When having problems or
irregularities during the test, technical staffs are responsible for timely notification
to the investor, design consultancy unit and supervision consultants to take appropriate
remedial measures.
e) The data records must be complete and clear, not be erased and be transferred to
the handling office promptly.
f) Human resources allocation for the experiment: In each test system put 02
observers (01 technician recording results, 01 assistant worker).
g) Avoid the influence of weather and other impacts from external to influence
experimental results.

6. SAFETY GUIDELINES
6.1. Safety measures for people and equipment
- Allocate security guards and medical personnel to be on duty 24/24 during the
test.
- All technical staffs and construction workers in the project must be learnt about
safety at work and be assigned for specific tasks before joining the service at work.
Everyone is equipped and forced to use appropriate labor protection such as
gloves, shoes, hard hats and so on.
- There must have rain or shine, wind cover canvas to protect experimental
equipment.
- The construction equipment must be submitted with certifications of quality
control before being put into the construction site.
- The shift leader, drivers must check for safety before performing the work.
- The works of transportation, installed at night must be performed with floodlights
enough light.
- Safety on counterweight system installation and installation of equipment on high.
- Climb on experimental frame by rope ladder, absolutely not up via crane.
- Must have a professional traffic indicator.
6.2. Safety of third parties
- There are signs, restriction and warning of activity areas of the experiment
during the field experiment.
- People who have no duties are not allowed to attend at the experimental
area.
- Coordinate with other units on the working site to implement common safety
measures.
6.3. Environmental sanitation, fire prevention, and so on
- Appoint professional staffs in charge of fire safety, environmental hygiene.
- Training for technicians and workers participating in field experiments to
understand the orders in the fire and explosion protection and use fire-fighting
vehicles proficiently.
- Do not bring flammable or explosive substances into the construction site.
- Equip facilities for fire and explosion prevention such as fire sand tanks,
water tanks, CO2 spray.
- Technicians and workers involved in the experiment must do personal activities
and eat outside of the construction site, only technicians, workers and security
guards who are on duty are allowed to stay in the site at night.

- Not allowed to discharge exhausted oil, unnecessary items and rubbish


into the construction site.
- Personal hygiene and garbage disposal must be at the right places.
- Check and clean the tires before the trucks and specialized equipment move out of the
site.
- Once done all the work of the field experiment, make clean up and hand over the
plan to the investor.
- Taking measures for rain water drainage.
- Transport vehicles must be clean before leaving the site. The experimental
points near roads or residential areas should have canvas.
- Measures against Noise: Transport vehicles and cranes need to be fitted with
silencers, smoke and dust reducers.

7. DATA COLLECTION & REPORT


1. Experimental results report includes the explanation of the experiment, and specific
conclusions about the experiment:
- Locations map of tested piles;
- Graph of load and settlement relationship: P-S;
- Chart of the relationship of load - displacement - time: P-S-t;
- Record of the results of the experiment;
- Certificates of pressure meters, settlement gauges.
2. Must have check and take-over minutes for each tested pile including all signatures
of related parties immediately after the end of the experiment.
3. After construction work is completed, plan must be made clear and return to the
investor for later stage development.
