A. Answer the following Questions.


1. Does the teaching profession fulfil all the elements of a profession?
The teaching profession had fulfilled the elements of a profession. Before we
enter the world of teaching profession, we must have a professional education that will
take four years of studying and pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers before we
get our license. It is an indication that we had undergone professional education and
capable to perform our job with knowledge.
Teaching profession also has its own Code of Ethics that must follow and the
organization we belong should also have a certification and accreditation that provides
proof indicating that the institution is capable and has an integrity in providing quality
service. Aside from that, teaching profession requires a lifetime education to ensure that
our knowledge and skills continuously improve overtime.

2. Is professionalization synonymous to professionalism?


Professionalization and professionalism are different. Professionalization is a
process that include training - mostly took years - that someone has to undergo to hone
his/her skills to become a well-developed to become qualified to the criteria of their
chosen career. Meanwhile, professionalism refers to the characteristics of a person
needed to or expected to possess and display inside or outside of their field of work.
B. What actions did the Philippine government do after the EDCOM Report?
As teachers were considered as the backbone of society’s education, they are also
experiencing indifferences. The workloads, sleepless nights, low salaries, delayed
benefits, and unsupported health assistance, just to name a few. These are the common
problems of both private and public teachers that affects their effectiveness as teachers.
As a result, the production of quality students specifically in the teaching profession is
poor.
These were reported by the EDCOM to address the shortcomings of the
Philippine Government to provide a solution.
The Philippine Government enacted laws and programs to respond to the
problems inside the educational system in the Philippines such as: (1) Teachers’
Compensation and Support Act of 2018 that aims to provide an appropriate salary to
teachers. Under this law were various programs implemented to provide benefits to the
teachers such as Teachers’ Salary Subsidy (TSS) that provide annual salary to qualified
teachers in ESC - participating Junior High Schools. (2) Extension of the Curriculum or
simply the implementation of Kto12 Curriculum. The students who were under of this
curriculum will take another two years of studying in High School to prepare them in
taking their chosen course in college. (3) The establishing of Commission on Higher
Education that would encourage school to develop special vocation that has relevance to
the society. (4) There was also an improvement in teachers’ welfare and development. (5)
An increase in the number of school days in a year. (6) And the creation of the National
Teachers Board for the professionalization of teachers.
