B. Review
The definition of circle ma’am is when a set of all points
Now before we can understand our topic. Lets have that are at a fixed distance from a fixed point are joined
first our review. then the geometrical figure obtained is called circle.

What do you know about circle? This is circle looks like.

And to get the Area of the circle = π × R² is the

formula.

And the parts of the circle are the following.

Center
Radius
Diameter
Circumference
Arc
Sector
Semi-Circle

Very good, it seems like you still remember what is

circle.

B. Lesson Proper

1. Motivation
Before we finally start our new lesson, Let’ s have a
song.

This song is called circle song.

So let’s start with a given point, we’ll
call it Point A

From here how do we make a geometric circle

shape?

You pick a point here, draw a dot, and then

measure

The distance of your dot to our Point A circle

center

Now keep on plotting points, that same distance

away

Just keep plotting and plotting until we’ve

got our full circle shape

Ok your circle’s looking fine, now for some

terms to define it

Let’s learn area, diameter, circumference,

and what PI is

And start with area

Then the diameter

And how about that circumference

And PI equals 3.14 plus more

back to the area

then the diameter

UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN PHILIPPINES
Tamag, Vigan City
2700 Ilocos Sur

And how about that circumference

And PI equals 3.14 plus more

Alright so back to point A, our center as

we discussed

The distance to the edge of the circle is

the radius

And if we extend that line across the full

length of the circle

Then we use a D and call this the diameter

But how about the distance all the way around

the edge

Here we use the letter C, and call this one

the circumference

To find this we use C = D times PI

Or 2(PI) times R if the radius is all that you can find

Alright, so what does this PI number mean?

Ratio of a circle's circumference to diameter,

it’s always
3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197

So y’all witnessed from this exhibit that

this Pi number’s infinite

It just goes on, on and on, an irrational

number that never ends

Ok let’s say your radius is 6

What would be the calculation of the
circumference?

So two times PI times your radius of 6

Is 37.69, but remember it’s approximate

The area’s the space the circle takes up

on the surface

Area is (PI) R squared an equation of importance

Back to our example, a radius of 6

You’d square it, six times six equals 36

Multiply that times PI and we’ve got our solution

Area is 113.097

Those mathematical word presented have a

connection to our topic today and I hope it energized We are going to discuss all about Arcs, Chords and
you all. Central Angles ma’am.

Do you have any idea on what will be our lesson for

An arc is a part of the circle that is unbroken and

consists of two endpoints.
 Semicircle- arc that measures exactly 180
 Minor arc- an arc that is smaller than a
semicircle or measures less than 180.
 Major arc- an arc whose measure is greater
than 180 or bigger than a semicircle.
 A central angle is an angle whose vertex is
the CENTER of the circle (sides are the two
radii)
 The measure of a central angle is equal to
the measure of the intercepted arc.

At this point, we will now try to emphasize about

arcs about central angles about chords properties.

What is our semicircle here?

What is our minor arc?

What is our major arc?

Very good!

Now let’s move to central angle.

Kindly read

Thank you. this one it is also a central angle the vertex located
a center non-circle ma’am
To make it simpler, where the vertex is in the center
that have two radii.
Note class that radii are congruent meaning they are
same.
Lets have an example.

This one is not a central angle because the vertex is not

located in the center of the circle so it does not satisfy
the property of the central angle ma’am.

So from this given drawing this is a central angle

accepted because the vertex is on the center of the
circle .
Now try this. Determine if the circle is an central
angle.

Postulate 22: The Central Angle- Intercepted Arc

Since you are now familiarize with central angle and to the measure of its intercepted arc. mXOY=MXY
arc lets dig deeper our knowledge on arcs and
central angle.

Central angle XOY divides circle O into two types of

arc. One is XYZ which is a minor arc. The other arc
formed is XYZ which is a bigger arc that is called the
major arc. The symbol for an arc is a curve on top of
the endpoints of the given arc.
An arc can be measured in degrees or in linear
measure (cm, inch, etc.)
Solution: Using Postulate 22, we have
M XOY= mXY
Now we have here postulates . 80° . = mXY ma’am.
Kindly read

Postulate 23: The Arc Addition Postulate

The measure of an arc formed by two adjacent arcs
in the sum of the measure of the two adjacent arcs.
Thank you Two arcs are adjacent when they have a common
endpoint on the circle.

Example 1
Given the measure of XOY=80° .
What is the measure of XY?

Very good!

Kindly read.

Solution: Since the arcs are adjacent then PQR is

equal to the sum of PR and QR.
PRQ=PR+QR
PRQ=120° + 60°
PRQ=180° ma’am.

semicircles namely PTQ and PRQ.

55° ma’am.

26° ma’am.

Note class that PR and QR have a common endpoint

(point R) on the circle. Therefore, they are adjacent arcs.
110° ma’am.

Thank you.

Let’s check your understanding

Answer the following:

1. The measure of the central angle is 55° , what is
the measure of its intercepted arc?

2. The measure of the intercepted arc of a central

angle is 36° , what is the measure of the central
angle?

3. A circle has a central angle that measures 110° , Solution:

what is the measure of its intercepted arc? If ROQ measures 75° , then RQ is also equal to the
measure of ROQ, which is 75° ma’am.
4. If AB measures 90° and BC measures 60° , what is
the measure of ABC?

Good Job!

DEGREE MEASURE OF AN ARC

The degree measure of a minor arc is the measure of

the central angle, which intercept the arc.

Solution: PTQ and PQR are semicircles. Therefore,

they measure 180° ma’am.

305° ma’am.
Example 3

ROQ is the central angle and it intercepts RQ.

What is the measure of RQ?

150° ma’am
Very good!

Kindly read the slid.

Example 4
In Fig. 3, RQ is a minor arc that measures 75° . Find 195° ma’am
the measure of the major RPQ.
Solution: It RQ= 75° , then RPQ =360° - the measure
of the minor arc RQ
RPQ =360° - 75°
RPQ= 285°

The degree measure of a semicircle is 180°

SUM OF CENTRAL ANGLES

 The sum of the measures of the central
angles of a circle with no interior points in
common is 360.
 An inscribed angle is an angle whose vertex
is on a circle and whose sides contain
chords.
 The measure of an inscribed angle is equal
to ½ the measure of the intercepted arc.

Excellent!

Now let’s move to the sum of central angles.

Kindly read.

Thank you.

Sum of central angles as we all know 360 degree is

the area of the circle meaning to say by the entire
circle, adding all of the angles with no interior points
in common automatically you will arrive at 360.

110° ma’am

100° ma’am

From the simple drawing here if you have 140° ma’am

One, two, three four, or four central angles here 90° ma’am
because the vertex of these angles is this point so
meaning to say they are all central angles adding all 360° ma’am
of these you will arrive at 360.

so we could say that measure of angle 1 plus

measure of angle 2 plus measure of angle 3 plus
measure of angle 4 is equal to 360 degrees.

Example 6
Given the following measures of central angles on
the circle.
∠1+ 115, ∠2=85, ∠3=70, and ∠4=90, therefore,
115+85+70+90= 360° 15° ma’am since arc BC is equal to 15° ma’am

60° ma’am since arc DE is equal to 60° ma’am

Let’s check your understanding
100° ma’am since arc GABC is 115° and arc BC is 15°
Compute for the sum of the given central angles.
then we just subtract it ma’am.

20° ma’am since diameter is equal to 180° and arc ED is
