3. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
The insulator shall have its dimensions and main features as per the drawing and table above.
Other characteristics shall be according to the Brazilian ABNT NBR 5032 Technical Standard
(“Isoladores de porcelana ou vidro para linhas aéreas e subestações de alta tensão”, that is,
porcelain and glass insulators for high-voltage overhead power lines and substations).
Alternatively, it is acceptable full compliance with ANSI C29.5 Technical Standard (American
National Standard for Insulators, Class 56-3 multi-part pin insulator). See, also, Item 9 below
(Figure 1 and 2) on dimensional requirements to be followed.
4. MATERIALS
Dielectric of ceramic (porcelain) or annealed glass or toughened glass. The insulator hole shall
have an adequate internal thimble for use with metallic pin.
5. FINISHING
The porcelain shall be vitrified in brown (Munsell 5 YR 3/3) or light gray (Munsell 5 BG 7.0/0.4)
colour. The glass is generally colourless or greenish, but it is acceptable the manufacturer
standard.
6. TESTING
Tests shall be performed in accordance with the method prescribed in the Brazilian ABNT NBR
5049 Technical Standard (“Isoladores de porcelana ou vidro para linhas aéreas e subestações
de alta tensão – Ensaios”, that is, tests on porcelain and glass insulators for high-voltage
overhead power lines and substations).
Alternatively and taking into account Item 3 above it is acceptable compliance with ANSI C29.1
Technical Standard (American National Standard Test Methods for Electrical Power Insulators),
or another equivalent document.
7. IDENTIFICATION
The following minimum information shall be indelibly and legibly engraved on each piece of
insulator:
8. WARRANTY
The pin-type insulator shall be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty against any project,
materials or productive processes failures that may occur within a period of 18 months from the
date of manufacture. The manufacturer shall be obliged to repair such failures and if necessary
replace the insulators under his sole responsibility. In case it may be prooved design or
production error that may hinder all the units of the batch, or batches, the manufacturer shall be
obliged to replace all of them.
9. ANNEXES
Figure 1 and 2 below show dimensional details for pin insulator requirements to be
accomplished by technical standards other than Brazilian ABNT NBR 5032 (Item 3 above).
