SELF LEARNING KIT IN SCIENCE GRADE 3

FIRST QUARTER
WEEK 4
Our Lesson

Changes in States of Matter

In this module, we will be discussing the matter that can change from one state to another.

Our Target
At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to:
1. infer that matter can change from one state to another.
2. cite evidence that matter changes from one phase to another
Let’s
Try
DIRECTION: Choose from the box the word being described in each underlined word.

SOLID LIQUID GAS

________1. Marvin plays his marbles with his friend.

________2. Luna used shampoo for taking a bath.
________3. Mother prepared a colorful balloon in my birthday.
________4. Anton accidentally pour the water on the floor.
________5. Father climbed in the mountain to breathe fresh air.

Let’s Explore

This lesson will discuss to you about the changes that happen to matter from solid to liquid, liquid to
solid, liquid to gas, gas to liquid, solid to gas and gas to solid.

Pick up the Concept

Matter changed from one state to another. When a kind of matter is heated, its states changes. When heat
is added to an object, its molecules move faster. The faster the molecules move, the more freely they spread
apart.
 Solid to liquid
Solid can change from liquid state if heat is applied.
Melting, or fusion, is change from solid to liquid. Melting
is opposite of freezing. Melting point of a solid is the
temperature at which it turns to liquid. The melting point
of ice is 0 º C (32 º F)- the same as the freezing point of
water. Figure 1. The butter in a solid

where it is placed. When it is cooled, its molecules slow it, the butter melts and turn

into liquid.
down and the butter becomes solid again.

 Liquid to solid
A liquid becomes solid when it is placed inside the freezer because heat
energy is removed. Particles of the liquid slow down and get very close

together. Freezing or solidification is a change from liquid to solid. Freezing point is the temperature at which
a liquid turns to solid. The freezing point of water is 0 º C (32 º F).
Example: Juice In plastic container can turn into ice candy when placed in a freezer.

 Liquid to Gas
.
A liquid does not have to boil to become a gas. When a liquid is
exposed to heat, its molecules move even farther apart. When you
hang wet clothes under the sun the clothes will become dry. The
alcohol on your palm disappeared because it absorbed heat energy
from your palm and turned into a gas. Particles speed up. Particles
that gain enough energy enter the air as vapor or gas. This is called Figure 5. Alcohol on your palm disappeared
evaporation. and turn into vapor.

Gas to Liquid
When a gas is cooled it gives off heat, and its particles slow
down and move closer to each other. Eventually, they
condense or form drops of liquids. This is called
Figure 6. Condensation occurs when dew
condensation. An illustration below shows the glass of cold forms from the water vapor in air on a
water. When warm air hits the cold surface, it reaches its cold morning.
dew point and condenses.

 Solid to Gas

Some solids do not melt, they change directly to gas without

passing through the liquid state. This change is called
sublimation. Dry ice, bathroom deodorizer and mothballs are
examples of sublimation.

 Gas to Solid

Sometimes, gas also changes into solid. An example is snow.

Snow are ice crystal that fall from the clouds. They are formed
when the temperature of the air is very cold. The water vapor
immediately deposits, or changes into solid.

Let’s Work Out

A. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is not.

________________1. Some solids like ice undergo sublimation when exposed under the sun.
________________2. In freezing, water will change to ice.
________________3. The moisture outside a cold glass of water is condensed wax.
________________4. Wet clothes undergo condensation when you placed under the sun.
________________5. Butter melts when heat is applied to it.
________________6. Ice cream in popsicle stick mixture undergo solidification when placed inside the
freezer.
