FIRST QUARTER – LESSON 5 MUSIC 5
ACCIDENTALS IN MUSIC AND F CLEF

EXPLORE AND LEARN

Accidentals in Music
You have learned that musical symbols are very important in music. They a
essential tools in writing a song. Accidentals are other musical signs commonly used
musical compositions. They are used to change the pitch of a note.
The three most commonly used accidentals are the sharp, flat, and natural signs
The sharp ( ♯ ) sign raises the pitch of a note by one semitone or half tone.
The flat (♭ ) sign lowers the pitch of a note by one semitone or half tone.
The natural ( ♮ ) sign restores the effect of a raised or lowered note to its origin
pitch, which means that it cancels the effect of a previous sharp or flat sign used on a no
within the same measure.
Study how the accidentals are written on the staff.

When a sharp or flat is placed on any line or in any space of a staff, the name of th
line or space will change, taking on the name of the sharp or flat.
Look at the previous example. The note in the first measure has a sharp sign, so you nam
this C♯. The note next to it has a natural sign. This denotes that the C♯ goes back to its
original pitch and is now called C♮. Thus, the natural sign cancels the effect of the raised
note.
Look at the keyboard on the right. See where the
sharps and flats are found on it.
The five black keys from lower C to higher C on the
keyboard are both sharps and flats. The white keys are
called natural keys.
When you move from a white key to the black key
next to it, this movement is called a semitone or a half tone.
For example, if you start playing from F♮ to F♯, you are
moving by a half step. You also move by a half step when you move from G♮, which i
white key, going down the G♭, which is a black key.
